Suspected drug dealer arrested

Officers patrolling a new walking path under highways 1 and 9 on Sunday night caught a suspected drug dealer armed with a "makeshift blackjack," Santa Cruz police reported.

Bryan Young, a 26-year-old transient on probation, allegedly had methamphetamine and the blackjack -- a short leather-covered club, with a heavy head on a flexible handle -- when the officers stopped him along the San Lorenzo River levee around 8:20 p.m., according to police spokesman Zach Friend.

Police suspect Young had been selling drugs near the homeless shelter on Coral Street. Because he is on probation, officers searched him and found methamphetamine in a Ziploc baggie and the weapon, Friend said.

Young was arrested on suspicion of a probation violation, possessing a controlled substance with intent to sell and possessing a dangerous weapon.

How many stabbings go on that we do not even hear about? It is nice to hear/read about the criminals getting caught, even though if it is after some time has passed.

Some of these people are so messed up that they wouldn't even remember (much less care) about stabbing someone after a couple of days or even less has gone by.
Some of these drugs turn brains into frankenstein monster versions.

Maybe 'Meth Trout' is an endangered species and they must be let go....Meth Trout have a scaly silver appearance and once they get 'hooked' they do crazy things, jumping & flying all over the place. That is why they are catch n release, protected species in our neck of the woods

"Perchinsky listed as his address, the Coral Street Transient Shelter." Another success story of Santa Cruz's liberal establishment. Close the shelter NOW!

If he is homeless can we assume he is not a resident here as well? Please send him back to his last known address. I, for one, am tired of our city and residents having to pick up the pieces after low-life vagrants commit crimes here....enough!

I'd rather solve the problem rather than pay taxes to cover the $25K a year in prison costs for the rest of this guy's life.

Prison is not the solution even though I don't want guys like this on the street.

Catch and release isn't the solution becuase we end up with situations like this.

We really need to get these people into some effective drug treatment programs to bring them back to reality. I know this cost $ but prison costs a lot more.

If we are spending money on prison dollars, just focus on the meth/heroin dealers.

I don't get it !! Why do perp's have to have weird A -S-S names.

Protect yourself, ask someone their name before they get too close.

For what it is worth, I know the guy, from school from a long time back. He has mental issues, a local guy, just not able to work in a shared reality. This is sad to hear, albeit not unexpected. I am glad he is caught and a threat like him is not around BUT, it would have been better to have seen his mental challenges caught and addressed better before he stabbed someone.

I bet the Brown hater crowd is severely disappointed the stabber wasn't Mexican or Latino.

I said at the time this happened that it was probably one of the transients living either in one of the cars or trailer/campers that park along the highway at the edge of town, or one of the "campers" who inhabit the no-man's land between the highway and Natural Bridges. So...big surprise.

I'm not sure that ht sighting of your stabber counts as a 911 event.

Also...why didn't that guy have a cell phone?
