Since a large shopping Mall has been tried and failed at that particular location, it may be time to invest in low cost housing. Housing is always at a premium in the South Bay and a shortage in many areas. Also new schools accompanied with parks might be considered. Let's see how many residents care enough to come out to attend the meeting.

R-smart, apparently this site is not in your backyard. No more housing, we are sick of it. The City can barely keep the current crime rate under control and city services are currently taxed to the hilt. Housing in this part of town is excessive. Really, we appreciate the suggestion, but you have to consider the history of our neighborhood, housing is the easy answer for the developer but at the residents' expense

R-Smart

The Hawthorne Mall failed for many reasons:

Poor Security
Bad parking which was effected by poor security
Economic downturn in the economy and specifically the aerospace industry in the early 90's.

Could a shopping Mall work in that part of Hawthorne, yes but you'd have to have a design that took security into consideration and an ownership group that was committed to keeping the site secure from criminals.

Hey, here's an idea...Walmart! Take that Inglewood.

I think they should re-open it. Take all the procedure to make it a safe secured place for people to shop. It will provide many jobs for many people that were left without jobs for past couple of months.

Believe me I do understnd your delema. I have lived here in the South Bay for over 56 years, gone to High School & College here, raised my kids here, owned property and business here.

The main concern for the City of Hawthorne is how do they turn that important property into a tax generating venue? Housing, businesses and the like are at the top of the list to be considered. Public input is paramount here so attend the meetings so that your thoughts may be considered by the Planning Dept. and City Council as well. Participate in making your community a better place to live. Be heard and be a leader, not a follower.

I have an idea. Why not make it a park or some other public use space? Supposedly Americans are getting lazier and fatter because of inactivity so making this area a park with a jogging track, gym, community center, and exercise equipment will be a boon to the community.

Nothing wrong with open space until a realistic need is seen.
There is way too much retail, and there seems to be no new ideas to put the existing retail to use. How many Bestbuys and Sportsmarts can their be?
