What is the history of Gray Gables, is it haunted? I have been told there are many haunted houses in the area.

It is not haunted..lol. just a very old building for apartments...the tenants might haunt it. So I take it that your looking for a rental? You'd be better to find one in Rouses Point. And it's cheaper for utilities. You can even rent a whole house pretty cheap.

I am wanting to buy a home in the area. Checked out Champlain but the taxes are so high. Liked Rouses Point for the close location of the bridge to Vermont. But Chazy is closer to Plattsburgh, but there are very few places for sale there. I looked at a nice old farm house that had 20+ acres but was told by several people that it has been haunted for years. House huntings is wearing me down.

I am not nesessary looking for land. What I would like is public water and sewer, and 1/2 acre or a bit more, and something with a garage and a smaller home with move in condition. I did find one in Champlain but the taxes were 2500.00 a year plus the water and sewer charges, on a 70,000 home. Dannaora has some small older homes, but man the stairs in them, you have to be a mountain goat to up and down them. How are the taxes in Rouses Point compared to Champlain? I like the Chazy area because it not that far to the Mall in Champlain which looks like it has everything you need on a daily bases without having to travel in to Plattsburgh. I am also wondering if Chazy has a medical clinic or health center.

My home is valued at $60,000 and my taxes here in Malone total 2500 too. And we have the highest gas, fuel oil and electrical costs of anywhere in the nation for some reason. The county welfare give-away sure doesn't help a bit. It's called the "Cadillac County" for a reason by welfare recipients.

Contact Gordie Little. If there's any stories about the place, he'd know them. Nice man too. Write to him care of the Press Republican. He's in that every other week on Sunday too. I wish they'd go back to every week though. I don't even buy that paper unless his column is in it that week.
Anyway, get in touch with him.

Gray Gables is set up for section 8 tenants. Some of the finest from the Lake Side Apts...to the Beekmantown Stonehelm Motel.

Thank-you everyone for the info on moving. I did choose a home in Chazy and so far am very happy and am starting to meet some people. I was interested in the play which was held at the Winery last week, but I had to go out of town and missed it. I wondered if was good?

Malone's taxes are ridiculous for the size of the town and village. The biggest issue is a lousy, expensive police department that doesn't do their job. They do things like serve warrants and pick up people with the license plate reader, but they don't do much more than that. Reading the local paper, most arrests in the area are from the Troopers - not the locals.
The problem with Malone is that so many of the properties are tax exempt. Fully 45% don't have to pay land taxes. That means the other 55% have to make up the slack. There needs to be something done in lieu of taxes like a PILOT program for tax exempt properties. The Catholic church alone has huge holdings in the village and it's the richest organization in the world at an estimated value of over 200 billion dollars. They can surely afford to pay something. Add to this all the other properties that don't pay land taxes and the expense is absurd. Another reason is that it's well known that Franklin County is the Cadillac of welfare payouts. They've managed to provide more for welfare recipients than any other county. This all costs money and it's a depressed area. Good thing they have the prisons. Without them, the town would have dried up years ago.
