On May 5th, my niece who attends Round Lake Middle school came home to tell me that the school had been placed on a lockdown after the police had received information about weapons being brought to school by students. The police and administrators conducted a locker search and a knife was found in a classmates locker.

I didnít give the locker search a second thought until
my niece brought home a letter from the principle stating the search was only a drill and searching lockers was only a part of the drill. The letter also stated the locker search ďdid not yield any significant item pertinent to the health and safety of the building.Ē The letter also urges parents to talk to their kids about leaving perishable food items in their lockers. Perhaps the principle should tell the parents to talk to their kids about bringing weapons to school

I really donít understand why the principle would purposely deceive the community by hiding the fact that a weapon was found in a studentís locker and try to pass the lockdown off as a safety drill.

The community deserves more Mrs. Principle!

It's principal, not principle.

Thanks for the post. The safety of the children is more important then the principal pretending nothings wrong in her school. Do we perhaps have a principal with no principles?

How do you know for certain that a knife was found in the student locker? What kind of knife was it? Students can even get "in trouble" for bringing a table knife to school.

How about we don't have adults jumping to knee-jerk conclusions based on what kids telling them without first considering there may be more to the story?

I really don't see why several police officers involved in this so called "drill" would lie about a folding hunting knife being found. My concern is hardly a knee-jerk conclusion.

Random drills have been going on since the late 80's if not earlier. This is nothing new. The police come in with the dogs to check for drugs.

On the flip side, I have a hard time believing that a student would hear what the school/ police found unless they need the student involved.

The original poster made the knee-jerk reaction. From what a middle school student said when she came home from school, Lopez automatically concludes the principal is lying, that a knife was found, and that there was a threat to the safety of the students.
