loud boom or explosion

At about 10:30 tonight, I heard a very loud explosion. At first I thought it was fireworks, but it wasnt. I am in Round Lake Park by the way. Now I spoke with some friends in Cambridge Courts trailer park and they have no power now. I also spoke with a friend in Lake Villa off of Deep Lake rd. and it shook their house.
Did anyone else hear or feel this and does anyone know what happened? It sounded like possibly a plane crash, or a power plant exploding. It was unreal. I thought we were being bombed for a second, it was that loud.

Oh also, my friend in Round Lake at Cambridge Courts did see a bright light behind them with the loud explosion noise, and then 5 minutes after that is when they lost all power in their area.

I heard, what I thought were fireworks at that time. They continued for a while, so I figured someone was having a party.

I thouhgt that at first too, didnt pay much attention to it, but when the really long loud boom happened, it made me jump and run outside to see if I could tell what it was. 5 minutes later, all I heard were tons of sirens.

"I live in Kenosha and from 2140 through 2150 this evening we heard a series of cyclical explosion type noise. The noises sounded repetitive and continuous. During the last few seconds the noises sounded one after the other and reminded me of the noise created from a carpet bombing used in vietnam.

I also did hear a loud boom, single explosion at around 9:58 PM. I noted the time. very loud and interesting that it was also heard in Round Lake. Must have been very big. Why don't the people whom work for us tell us what it was.

sounds like a good 'old fashioned' transformer shorting out. bright flashes, loud pops, power loss. It happened much more frequently years ago.(especially if a squirrel stepped across the terminals!)

I'd like to throw some of my neighbors barking dogs over those terminals.
