A limited proposal to allow homeless people to sleep on the floor of a Ross church this winter has opened a rift between residents who support the idea and those who claim it could put local children at risk of sex offenders and the mentally ill.

Sure, let Homeless people who have lived and worked in Ross sleep in the church. No outsiders that have drifted in though, otherwise Main will end up looking like San Francisco. BTW, San Francisco has spent over a Billion dollars on "homeless services", shouldn't we send them over there?

This borders on the ludicrous!!!!
A small town such as Ross is not set up to take homeless people--the majority of whom will have mental/substance abuse/criminal problems. We need shelters for people who have problems and have fallen on hard times--but not in residential area's such as Ross. Just look at what has happened to downtown San Rafael.
This is so funny that it's sad!!!

I think a good splash of reality will do the town some good.

A nice soviet style, three story, with faux painted architectural detail, low cost housing apartment building would be the finishing touch.

Of course, it would not house people providing services to the town, you know, the oft mentioned "work force" housing. It would house people who don't work and the taxpayers would be providing services to the low income residents....ie food stamps, child care, cash welfare and of course, low cost housing.

It will be a progressive paradise!

What this article fails to mention is that the First Presbyterian Church in San Anselmo actually hosted a "St Johns Night" at their church last year. Ross residents persuaded the Town of Ross to NOT allow St Johns open up as an emergency shelter although the church and its parishioners wanted to help. St John staff and volunteers came to San Anselmo one night a week and ran the program at the First Pres Church on Ross Ave (across the street from a SCHOOL!). First Pres therefore hosted the program three nights a week last winter. As Ford Greene stated this evening, let's hope that San Anselmo's warmth helps melt Ross' icy heart. C'mon Ross NIMBY's, you've lost your way.

Fallen on hard times? Just a word?

To get to be homeless in California is an act of will. You have to blow through all your money, be unable to take a job, alienate your relatives, anger all your friends and then cut a big hole in the welfare safety net.

A church floor doesn't solve anything for homeless single men. I suggest we open a residential treatment center and halfway house next to Eddies market and a massage parlor in the old butcher shop.

It's fun to watch all the rich, yuppie, limousine liberals in Ross squirm as they are faced with the realities of the real world beyond the gates of their mansions and their elitist little community. These people are nothing more than a bunch of wealthy country club hypocrites born with silver spoons in their mouth. Associating with these types of people causes a person to lose their soul and humanity. Homeless people have enough problems without having to live around the souless Ross ghouls.

wow. just wow. god bless the anonymity of the internet, where folks can be complete arse wipes, eh?

Here's a good article on the subject of Marin homeless. Read the comments,
too.

http://www.pacificsun.com/news/show_story.php...

"
There always will be a portion of the homeless population that needs psychological and physical care. Sweeney says about 75 percent of the single people in her programs have a psychological or physical disability. Programs offered through organizations such as Ritter House and Community Action Marin target that population. A significant homeless population winds up on the streets because of bad luck, unfortunate circumstances and a critical shortage of affordable housing in the county."

These folks are bussed in late afternoon, and then bussed back out early morning. Seriously, what kind of interaction do you think they will have with kids across the street at school? They are not loitering in the neighborhood. they are getting on and off the bus. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I have read in previous articles about this shelter system that the people who take part in the program are hand-picked, and they stay inside the shelter rather than wander around the neighborhood. Correct me if I am wrong.

What would be nice to see is parents at the school organizing kids to make cookies, etc., and have them sent over as a gift for these folks. Teach empathy rather than fear and loathing.

We're counting on you to flex your money muscle. Those of us in mere blue collar places like San Rafael and Novato have to eat it as told but you have the power! Show us it can be stopped! Yeah! Go uber-rich! No homeless in your town when the rest of us who work hard have to deal with them anyway thanks to spineless politicians and bleeding hearts! Bwhahahahaha! Oh this is good.

Nothing wrong with taking care of our own poor people who have worked and contributed and are now screwed over by the Bush/Obama Depression.
Copies of Marin County property tax statements and or rent receipts for the last ten years would be a good way to establish eligibility.

Marin is however, the new frontier for bums and drifters from all over America. Lots of wealthy hand wringers, pliable padres like Gaffney, weather that's better than the Midwest.

"Gaffney said the law prohibits him from using the Megan's Law database to deny access to the program, but he said he works with the homeless and knows their individual suitability..." Good, so he's putting his own personal reputation, safety and his churches financial liability on the line. Let him do it in writing. Make an agreement that can be used in court by a parent or neighbor whose kid is molested or home burglarized.

Come on Padre, put your pliable parishioners' money where you mouth is.

I think we should bus them in from S.R. and NOVATO. These people will not help the homeless any more than they would bus in 200 illegals from the canal to the new school. The only illegals they want to see is the ones cleaning the house and yard for them. Maybe the ross mothers could open a small kitchen at the church and feed them.
