bus them to the ij offices
let them spend the night there after the staff goes home
members of the ij editorial board should open up their homes

Where was the IJ with an editorial when Terra Linda rejected the same program? Clearly because its Ross it makes a better story. Why dont the people of Ross have the same right to decide what they want in their community as the residents of Terra Linda?

Because Terra Linda has always offered and continues to offer support for these types of programs and Ross doesn't. It is, and always has been, an invisibly "gated community". The people of Ross do have the same rights to decide, and have always exercised them according to their own unique needs and desires. What else is all that money for?

Ross is not part of Marin... Ross is part of Ross county and is not responsible for non Ross problems.

I care about all sorts of things and want to help them... as long as they are kept the hell away from me, once they get to close for me, then they are burdens to my life and need to be shown the exit.

BTW i'm not from Ross and don't have enough money to be able to afford this attitude, but I can always dream

That's a nice technique called "deflection". Meg used that in this last election... "hey, look how bad Jerry Brown is!"... but it didn't work.

The Interfaith Chaplaincy and the participating churches deserve resounding applause for their ability to provide a compassionate partial solution to a need which has otherwise been unaddressed in Marin. Every community needs to understand its responsibility to contribute to needs of those who are at risk during the winter months.

Last year St Rita's Church participated in the winter shelter program without any incident at all. Rather it was an amazing experience, very eye opening and heart opening. Not only is St Rita Church in a quiet neighborhood (I live in that area) but St Rita School is on the same campus as the church. In fact I brought my own children down to help serve dinner and play music on the nights that fell on the holidays. Christmas Eve was a beautiful experience with great food, gifts and fellowship. St Vincent de Paul does an exemplary job screening out those who are not willing to follow the rules, everyone I encountered (and I was the hostess on many different nights) was quiet, respectful and so so thankful. We don't need this kind of them and us mentality in Marin.

I am sure that the people in the congregation (who all live in Ross, Kentfield or San Anselmo) have plenty of space in their mansions to house all of these homeless people.

Why not just take them into their homes and stop using the church as a lame reason to allow degenerates and losers into our communities. And for those who are not losers, but with mental issues - they should be in hospitals.

Oh Freedom!

The homeless who have lived and paid rent in Marin should be sheltered here. The homeless who wandered here to get social services instead of staying in the counties where they became homeless should be told to go back there. Marin is not responsible for supporting the rest of the world. Creating a place like Marin takes work!

Unreal. I would have expected more from an editor but then again, it is the backwater rag otherwise known as Marin IJ. Please sir, check your facts. In fact only 2 programs out of about 16 towns in Marin are running REST and IN FACT people are complaining. Who are your sources? REST? These guys are hiding behind some obscure clause in a well intentioned law to avoid asking uncomfortable but vital questions such a "who are you?" And "are you one of the thousands of homeless men in California who are running from a checkered past by seeking anonymity in homeless shelters?" Well documented by the way, if you had done any research...so yeah, people are hesitant to throw open their doors to REST clients. Has nothing to do with snobbery. It is about common sense.

How many Ross residents have poverty in their heritage a few generations ago or immigrant relations? Now too "removed" to remember they belong to the human race? Truly shabby people to cloak their NIMBYism behind all sorts of excuses.

That sums it up right there, on once sentence:
>"Does Ross need this?" asked one resident at a meeting on Tuesday.
Clearly the residents just care about themselves. Real bunch of Mother Theresa's there.

SUGGESTION
LETS GIVE ROSS RESIDENTS A CHANCE TO PAY THEIR WAY OUT OF THIS? ASK THE SAN ANSELMO CHURCH IF THEY WILL TAKE THE HOMELESS ON THE NITES THAT IT IS BEING ASSIGNED TO THE ROSS CHURCH?

HOW ABOUT IF THE ROSS RESIDENTS MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION TO THE SAN ANSELMO CHURCH? tHIS DONATION WILL BE POOLED AND GIVEN TO THE SAN ANSELMO CHURCH.

THEN ROSS RESDIENTS DONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT AND THE SAN ANSELMO CHURCH GETS INCREASED DONATIONS AND THE HOMELESS HAVEA PLACE TO SLEEP

"No one should be surprised if the homeless are camping in open space areas in town and nearby."

Why is that? Do they pay property taxes? Why do we pay property taxes?

This church is full of child molesters and now it will be full of homeless. Who knows maybe there will be homeless child molesters there as well. It's called cross-polination? drive this reverend out of town.

I have it. Let's sterilize the homeless and link welfare and any public aid to birth control. That way we won't gave this problem in another generation. All you bleeding hearts take them in. Last I knew this was a democracy, not a commune. If you like communism move to China. If not, let communities decide for themselves. You don't have to live in Ross to know it is just common sense to fingerprint strangers trucked into a neighborhood. It's not rocket science to figure out most of the men aee addicts and alkies. I for one want nothing to do with them. They need to take responsibility and no amount of whining by this pastor is going to change that.

And how do you suggest this be enforced. You are suggesting a pretty radical concept that is outside the scope odf the word "donation" which is definitely voluntary by definition. An enforced gift? What part of free don't you understand? And you guys wonder why the Republicans took back the hiuse. Give to the extent you want and leave the rest of us alone.

You're right... and wrong. My family did have poverty 2 generations ago. My grandfather moved to America with $20 in his pocket. But he was never homeless for a single night! Why? Because he accepted personal responsibility for his own life, and didn't look to others to solve his problems.

BTW-- This wouldn't even be an issue if REST would simply agree to do criminal background checks on their applicants.(After all, REST says their guests are such great people, then their guests should pass a criminal background check with flying colors!) People in Ross, like people everywhere, simply want to live and raise their families in a safe environment. That's not NIMBYism, that's common sense.
