Excellent article, thank you so much!!!
The great tragedy of lymphedema is first, the failure of most of the medical community to understand the condition and secondly, the refusal of the insurance industry to see this for the debilitating, crippling and potentially fatal condition that it is.
A couple years ago when testifying before a subcommittee of the Georgia legislature, our group provided top notch stats that correct treatment/management of lymphedema would cost aproximately $5000 per year. To not properly treat lymphedema and instead having to treat the complications would eventually cost $100,000 per year on the average.
Despite the fact that it cost 20 times to pay for the treatment of complications then it does the condition, the insurance companies still opposed a lymphedema treatment bill.
Amazing, and then they complain about the high cost of healthcare.
