A 20 foot tall tree crushed the car roof? No way - had to be much taller than that and much bigger

This is inexcusable. Someone should be arrested for neligence letting the tree collapse. This is happening more & more, leading to innocent people losing their lives for no reason at all. Horrific tragedy for the Machichado family. Condolences to the family on their loss. Jose did not deserve this.

While this is certainly a tragedy for Mr Machichado's family and friends, and my prayers are with them, there are millions of trees on LI. Who's supposed to watch them all? There are probably more trees than people.

While waiting to make a turn, the tree fell on two cars. It looks like they are off the road because the trees usually are not in the middle of the road.

Without knowing who's the responsible party for this particular tree, it is common to see large trees that are not being maintained on people's properties. It is a homeowner's responsibility, expensive as it is, to check that roots are not rotting and to regularly trim dead limbs. It won't prevent every accident but anyone with trees needs to take care of them - trim ivy that is choking them, inspect for carpenter ant damage, and cut them down (yes, even us tree lovers know we have to do that sometimes) if they are leaning at a dangerous angle or have other problems. Again, can't say for sure that was the case here but it's something all property owners should do regardless. And of course trees on public lands need to be inspected by the responsible parties.

Thoughts and prayers for the families involved.

for starters when i lived on li i had a few tree incidents-1 in freeport where a tree hit my hood and bounced off and hit my roomates car and destroyed his trunk--my hood was carbon fiber so it was ok but thats besides the point--the n a tree fell mere inches in fronta my truck in huntington and was obviously unmaintained-
worse thing i can recall involving a tree was on round swamp road in huntington just north of the northern state-i was driving down round swamp road at about 11pm heading northbound--as i drove around the sharpest bend i noticed a tree that fell and slid down the landscape off to my left and was laying across the entire southbound lane and partially into my northbound lane-i jerked the wheel and drove around it-then i pulled over and ran up to the tree and did my best to move it but it was so heavy it wouldnt budge--so i got in my truck and hauled azz to my house where i immediately called 911-i told the dispatch about the tree and they said they would send someone out asap-i drove back to the bend where i saw a police car blocking the road--someone had already proceeded southbound, slammed into the tree and flipped theyre car over-i dont know the extent of the injuries but i had seen that tree for years--its still there now actually but just pushed back up onto the slope and laying there--the problem is a little more severe than you would think it would be

I live in freeport.
The village came and told me to take down my oak tree. A couple of limbs had fell in the street.
The total cost was about $3,000.

Taking down trees are very very expensive.

Not as expensive as a funeral.
