“Genius and prodigy are two terms I hate being pigeonholed into”

Roslyn Heights violinist Jourdan Urbach was honored Monday as one of the nation's leading youth volunteers after he raised $1.35 million for medical charities through benefit performances.

Urbach, 15, a sophomore at Roslyn High School, attends classes at The Juilliard School's Pre-College Division in Manhattan. His repertoire this year has included Henri Vieuxtemps' Violin Concerto No. 5 and Pablo de Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy.

He was one of 10 high school and middle school students selected from 20,000 applicants for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Read more

Enough with this young man already. He hates being called a genius and prodigy? He calls himself that all the time! The MTV documentary is proof of that - he refers to himself as genius or prodigy about ten times. His mother runs his PR and she is out of control. He is a hothouse flower and it is very sad because he has had no childhood. Now he is just full of himself and others will surpass him. You're getting a little old to be called a prodigy, Jourdan, and genius - you are not.

While I agree that Urbach is a very accomplished, intelligent young man, I do not believe he's a genius or a prodigy. His mother has practically been forcing him to build his college resume since age 2. If everyone was being trained to play a musical instrument and being taught mathematics and high vocabulary at age 2, we'd all be so-called "geniuses" and "prodigies". Jourdan & his mom seem to have one focus in life: to build his college resume. How great it is to say you've written 2 novels by age 13 and are a professional musician. The truth about Urbach's novels is that they suck and were printed by a vanity press (Goose River Press). I researched Goose River Press, and did you know that you have to pay them $30 just to read your manuscript, then something like $1 per page to print??? Urbach's rich parents have basically been buying his title and status as a genius and prodigy his whole life. Poor kid. He hasn't gotten to live a life.
