Good thinking Honch! If ya have been wearing a helmet all these years on the mini bus, why not continue wearing it in your car.

In many towns it is up to the township who owns the first 9 feet of so of your property from the road to maintain them. Here in DP we have many dangerous ,rotten trees along the road ( especially in the northeast side near Dix Hills )and a similiar situation could happen. The town fights people as they do not want to pay for the removal. Years ago Babylon had their own men remove them, they made a major all day or two day project out of but now the town got smart and hires private contractors who cut them down in a matter of a few hours or less.

I agree. I drive past that area everyday, including right after it happened, and it was very bad. I had three of my children in the car and thank God we took our time in the mall.

Such a shame. Condolences to the deceased's family. where the hell were the tree trimmers. There's far too many of these incidents where rotted trees are falling down killing or injuring innocent people. We had an incident up in Northern Westchester months ago where a beloved doctor was killed due to a falling tree. as far as the Mexicans comment goes, that area is high income, very bucolic. i wouldn't csll it a slum like Crimedanch & uniondale. Not saying crime doesn't happen in this area, but a lot less than others.

I also drove past that area yesterday as I do all the time and saw it all taped up with lots of police. It is a horrible tragedy. What are the odds that not only was someone killed like that in that area but that 2 toyotas were also driving in that area. Not your usual car you see driving around there let alone 2 of them both struck.

Forget about "maintaining trees".. This is just proof that when it's your time to go there is NOTHING you can do to prevent it - How much of a coincidence is that the person just happened to be at that place when that tree decided to fall - It was their time, period.

For years I had a huge dying maple tree that was a "leaner" out by the curb. Despite repeated complaints to the Town of Hempstead nothing was done. Finally, they told me that for a $25 permit I could take their tree down myself. I did take it down but those scummers didn't get a nickel.

Overtaxed and underserved is the lot of every Long Islander. Got a problem? Deal with it yourself.
