I saw the sign for the NSP Fire Dept's Booya today. I have never had Booya, I've always wanted to try it but never had the opportunity. I have heard some people say that it is really gross, while others say they love it. I hope to be able to try it.

It's a originally a Belgian Walloon (French-speaker) dish ... supposedly ... but many cultures make a close relative, esp the Irish.

Seems I've got nothing but time, but I guess I'll have to find a REALLLLLY big pot. The really big pot and lots of time makes it sound like cassoulet. I've never made that either, but I'd like to.

In southern Illinois, there are groups that get together to make chowder. There are chowder grounds in some towns, and churches use their large grounds in others. The contents are brought in and donated by the participants, and include most of the vegetables grown in the area, and the meat is beef, chicked, and anything else grown around. In other words, random. They cook it for hours, and it is tasty. Most places use iron kettles up to 3 feet across, and many chowders have thirty or so kettles. It is one of the biggest social events of the year. The proceeds of these events are used for community improvements and charity.

Yes, the soup may taste good, but meats and trans-fats pose a real and significant menace to health, especially of our kids. Trans-fats are something that really needs some scrutiny and regulation/restriction by the FDA.
