The Diocese "declined to discuss what action should be taken"? That's crazy. Embezzlement means jail time. NOT "therapy". That's total BS, and yet another enablement of the corrupt and perverse priesthood.

There was a priest in Chicago a couple years ago who did jail time for his embezzlement from his parish. Hookers and booze was his thing.

My question: Don't these parishes have basic accounting procedures in place for the cash they take in? Several people counting the offering/bingo/raffle money? Recepits for purchases? Bank receipts and statements? A finance board, or at least a treasurer or auditor?

Catholic parishes do no better protecting their finances than they do protecting their children from abusive clergy.

What is wrong with Catholic leadership? And why don't the laity demand accountability?

I am a former friend of John's. I'm totally stunned at this news. Reading the Trib's headline, I never would have imagined the story to be about my former friend.

I'll keep him and his family in my prayers.

No, accounting procedures at parishes are historically very lax. Its a cash business and there is not much control in many parishes over the accountability for cash. I worked with a public accountant that was assigned to audits at churches and he was not impressed with the way things were being done. This kind of thing will continue until cash accounting is better centralized. I am an usher at the church I attend and recently we have been placing cash into a large envelope at every mass. We do not seal the envelope but we give it to the deacon. What he does with it who knows, but it is supposed to go directly downtown.

Maybe because thieves have worn out the trust that is the foundation of friendship. You can forgive, but that doesn't mean you still have to consider them a friend.

I am so done with the Roman Catholic Church. It has outlived its usefulness to humanity. I'm shocked, after all that's happened, anyone can still be SHOCKED!!! Priests need to be able to marry, because women can help civilize them. Even gay partners might be a help. Where is the love of GOD?
From TV: I'd like to meet the guy who saw Christ on the Cross and said "that would make a nice necklace."

If I stole $112000 from your church, taking it away from whatever it would have went for, would you be my friend?

As for casting the first stone; sinning is breaking a religious rule. Since Atheists are not religious we don't have religious rules to break. Therefore we cannot sin against any religion any more than a non-Jewish cannot sin by eating ham and cheese sandwich. This means, Atheists are without sin. Can I throw rocks now because stealing that much money to gamble is just plain wrong?
