Jeez, you would think that Adams County would hire 2 payroll people at $30k each that are qualified and have it done in house. 93K is crazy.

Before comments pop up about it, I live in Adams and work in MD. Apparently the co. server goes thru Randallstown.

What most people don't realize is the additional costs and risks associated with payroll. When you account for managing direct deposits, the cost of printing paper checks, the record keeping and the printing of W-2s, outside of all the other costs, $93K is reasonable. Hiring 2 people at $30K per person is not.

Then it's a matter of opinion...you can clearly hire very responsible employees for a lot less than $93K that are more than adequately trained for payroll. Companies do it all the time (I do payroll for 200 people weekly and certainly don't make that much...I'm part time so no benefits...and my salary/paper I print on/computer I use/ink I use doesn't add up to 93K that's for darn sure). ADP had problems, the new company had problems, who's to say that even after spending $93K that the problems will be fixed? Sorry Adams County, get Quickbooks or Peachtree, hire a few people locally that are qualified. I can name 10 people off the top of my head that would like to work closer to home in PA that, like me, go to MD or drive an hour to work everyday. Rather than source things out to a company that you've had problems with before, try local hiring.

Aa a business owner I found it makes more sense to stick to what I am good at. I am certainly not an expert in payroll and human resources. I stick to manufacturing and improving that process. I can tell you ADP does a lot more than cut checks. The automation they provide is far beyond the payroll of years ago. I also found that you hire very responsible employees and when they leave you are left scrambling. The time and effort it takes to train someone to handle payroll is a waste of time and money.

I am an ADP employee now but I used to run my own business part-time and you are right "Mom to 3 Great Kids" that doing payroll can be done with a couple of folks for less money. But just as "BusinessSense" states - What do you want to spend your time doing? Running and growing your business or managing payroll, taxes, human resources, time cards, flexible spending accounts, 401k's etc. A simple payroll..sure we can help you do that..and we have a very simple internet based payroll program for that. But when you truly get down to it most of our clients are outsourcing not just the payroll but all the things that go with it. Based on the article (and the price tag) what was purchased was a lot more than payroll.
