Judge Davis:
Congratulations on belaboring the obvious. Nothing gets by you, does it? The man escorting the children was obviously in the wrong; whether you were driving too fast or not (we didn't get the benefit of the other side of the story, did we?). Was the "ancient epithet" a startled response or an active act of derision, or both? Only you two know.
Sir, you've taken the easy road. The "ancient epithet" is quite well known in the black community, and quite liberally exercised. Exercised with just as much, if not more, derision. But you've taken this opportunity to presume to lecture the white community. While attempting to appear above the fray, have you succumbed to your own prejudices in choosing not to address the issue in the black community?
If we are to leave this world a better place than we found it, all communities must actively participate. You had a great opportunity to address the issue from that perspective, but choose not to. One wonders why?

Question...when you were speaking to this fellow in Arizona about Baltimore - specifically Hampden - did you mention the 9 "children" who beat down a woman on the bus?
Would this not be as much a portrait of the city as a nice breakfast at Cafe Hon (which I enjoy myself from time-to-time)?
You see - if you want to discuss the good, please be honest about the bad.

It is a sad commentary on the times when the only reaction to such an incident is to become defensive.
We can all cite incidents of prejudice and bigotry, but we're not in a contest. "Can you top this?" is not productive. The behavior Judge Davis encountered is just as reprehensible as the bus attack, perhaps more so since it occurred in front of children who may replicate it. That is the worst aspect of the incident -- the generational continuation of bias and ignorance.

Sir..I can understand your disgust at the ignorance of what comes out of people's mouths! I like how Bill Cosby simply puts it. "There is very little respect today" no matter what race one is.
I had the same issue while traveling off of North Ave-it was more than frightening and I am a caucasion female.
Just let it be known that all people who were born and raised in Hampden are not iggnorant and Yes Sir....everyone who is from Baltimore and is African American knows about Hampden's reputation. I am not sure who is teaching these people but someone did teach me what is right and what is wrong and shows much iggnorance!

The Honorable Davis could do a ten part series on the iggnorance and violence of Baltimore. You are not giving him credit where credit is due-he is a judge and is a witness to all sorts of just "CRAP". I am certain he is very aware of the attack that took place on the city bus.....as well as the teacher attacked, the children being abused, children killing their parents as well as parents killing their children. "Nuts" and Rude-Ass" people come in all colors!

just like in the Sean Bell case, white people all over the country after they found out he was unarmed ask stupid and irrelevant questions like, was he a drug dealer? did he have a good job? what was his criminal background like?
as if any of those idiotic questions would somehow excuse the extreme deadly force of shooting a man 50 times who had NO WEAPON to speak of.

It would be interesting to see how judge davis has handled hid court cases. Is he one of the judges who are too liberal and lets criminals off with a slap on the wrist.Has any of his verdicts been wrong and caused some other innocent victims to have their lives ruined by his verdicts. It was wrong for the man too use that N word but it was also wrong for the judge to go public about it. Hope he goes public aboput the sane criminals he faces day in and day out. Its just a word, as bad as the F word.

Ugh. What is up with these comments? As a large, 240 pound caucasian male who would never use that word towards someone, I'm pretty sickened that Judge Davis had to experience this. I'm equally sickened by the reactions of what I can only assume are other caucasians in these comments.

As usual, instead of speaking out about the racist idiot who made the ignorant comments, the closet racists are the ones who will look right past that and rip into the man who was the recipient of the slur. Sadly, it's the typical response these days, you present evidence of a racially intolerant situation and you get accused of being in the wrong. The thing is, the man didn't lash out and beat on the racist that called him the name, he didn't resort to violence like some of our young people do today, he used his mind and his heart to talk about it. To some people, a black man is a (slur)whether he is a judge or a drug dealer, a presidential candidate or a pimp. He's wrong whether he turns the other cheek or if he defends himself physically, even in the face of violence.

Now what happens to white people in Baltimore when they go down the wrong street? They get gang beaten on buses by teenagers, they get harassed by armed gangs of dirt bikers, they may get shot, or they may be beaten and curb stomped into a coma by a bunch of thugs.

Just like the worst thing to happen to a black person is NOT being called a slur, white people do NOT get beaten every time they walk down a city street. You're generalizing. I could just as easily say the EVERY TIME a black man is pulled over he's going to get the Rodney King treatment based on what I saw on television up in Philadelphia, but it isn't true. There are a lot of good cops out there who were probably sickened by what they saw, and I don't judge all police officers like that. I also won't "call myself lucky" if I get called an ignorant racial slur by a racist. If you're going to make an argument, you'll have to do better than that.

Whatever you say. I am obviously living on another planet. I guess the stories of black thugs shooting at cops, beating up teachers, curb stomping and killing, gang beating white ladies on buses etc is all make believe.
What I am saying is as a Black man you have a 99.9999% of having nothing physically done to you by walking down a side street in hampden in the middle of the night.
As a white guy what would my chances be of making it out alive walking down a side street of North Avenue in the middle of the night? I'm gonna guess a lot lower than yours.
Now i'm not gonna make any excuses for some ignorant racist while folk, but i'd rather have some ignorant rascist black folk call me a name than beat me to death.

judge that is the real world. a large white populace in more then a dozen states voted for a blackman. it is judge what it is. we all go on from here. we will deal with the children who heard the continuation of the nword. white folks in baltimore will heal from the bus attack. black folks have healed from the rodney king thing and we will heal from both the new york shooting and the philly beat down. we all will survive and move on.
