This reminds me of public housing, prisons, or nuclear waste, good idea, but not in my neighborhood. It is too bad that the locals feel this way

Isn't 21st and Grove koontown? Why put it there? They will just burn it down like they did the Steens IGA in the late 60's.

|
They should put up a park filled with moneky bars.
|
||||
|
All they would serve at that location is chittlins, pigs feet and watermelon.

Steens ???? I thought it was Jabara's N.E corner of 21 & Grove and a Cleary's IGA on the S.E |

|
Do you remember the name of the IGA store that was on the N.E corner of Pawnee & K-15.It was a grocery store then the Carpet Center.
My dad said that he does remember a Steens market at 21 & Arkansas |

There was a Steens on 21st, just east of Grove on the north side in a shopping center. It had a department store in the basement. My uncle was the manager. 3 years before it burned the asst. gr and his wife were murdered there. I think a year or so ago the murderer was trying to get parole. After they burned it down he went to the one at 21st and Ark.
I remember the carpet center and that it was a grocery store before that, didn't know it was an IGA. |

My dad was in on the ground floor with the Carpet center when they opened the first store at West St & Central,he finally remembered the grocery store name it was Howard's. Clarence Howard and his brother.If dad remembers correctly Howards moved to where Leekers/Checkers is now and rented the old building to LaVone Perner owner of Carpet Center.

I remember Howards. I also remember LaVone and his commercials on tv, the one where he is standing on the roof of Century II saying "we sold enough carpet last year to cover the entire roof of Cent. II.
I was at the Spangles at Pawnee and K-15 last Saturday and noticed that building is now called Big Bobs. Where the laundry mat is at now was originally a TG&Y before it moved across Pawnee to the same building Leekers is in now, it was on the east side of the building. |

You were in town and didnt stop by the shak....... I was in a Carpet Center commercial as was the entire staff and their families,we were singing a Christmas carol LaVone was standing on a ladder throwing fake snow,the camera zooms in on him and he said "and thats why the King family dosent sell carpet" Big Bobs and Flooring Warehouse is owned by LaVone his son Arron runs them. TG&Y was still in the same building as Leekers when I met my wife in '81 Are you coming to town for Christmas ? We can meet at Spangles for some hot chocolate and a burger. |
