In the last six months, Dr. Lois Nora, president of the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, has seen at least 12 proposals on how her school should change. Read more

As far as anything regional in Northeast Ohio goes, Akron ought to be the administrative seat, given our centrality in relation to the rest of the region.

This strongly supports designating the U of A as the flagship/main campus in any consolidation of NE Ohio public colleges and universities in which the U of A is involved.

I also see no reason as to why NEOUCOM couldn't play some sort of a role at both CSU and the U of A, given the way Summa, Akron General, University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic are also becoming more and more intertwined throughout the region.

How does it support UA? Kent has far and away the besy nursing program in the state, ask those who run the UA nursing program. Kent has a roboust bio medical research link with NEOCOM. Geographically, NEOCOM is ten minutes from Kent, and THEY WON'T MOVE. Yes, some clinical work is done in Akron, but also done in Canton and Youngstown. The clinical set up works as it is.

The best bet is tht NEOCOMM stays as a combined instiution. Kent, CSU and YSU can all live with that. Get on the bus or get run over.

I am glad the University Presidents are finally enageing in great thinking. Louis Proenza has clearly led the way -- great campus, enrollment on the rise (Kent's enrollment numbers were spin - I should know I work there -like a total of ten new students overall)and the best research numbers of all the region, except Case. Scwartz and Nora are now waking up after a 5 year nap. Lefton is a complete ass, everyone cringes at his rudeness, including his own board, BUT he is providing agressive, creative leadership (just wish his handlers would give him straight talk about his unbecoming behavior and he could have been a little contrite about his European vacation -- unbelievable). Education in NEO is looking up. I am very encouraged

Akron should be in charge because they have a bunch of new buildings.

Some clinincal work is done in Akron, ignores the facts- 60% of the clinical work is done and that is where the hospitals are and thus the clinical sites, not in Kent or Rootstown. I am ok with it staying where it is -- but Kent cannont make a strong case for the NEUCOM merging with it just because we have a new Provost with a healthcare backround, doesn't erase the history and the facts. We need ambitious dreams for our region, but they have to be grounded in facts and we have to be collaborative and recognize when someone else has a superior position.

These presidents want more power, and it is good idea to listen to what they have to say, but never make a decision based on their opinions. Eventually, we need someone without any local attachement to decide.

As a newcomer to northeast ohio, I would like to see ONE major public university with two major campus here: Akron campus with strong professional schools such as engineering, law, and business, and medical: Kent campus with strong art, social and natural and sciences, and education.

Cleveland and Youngstown campus should be dedicated for teaching: as a two-year preparation campus (before entering Akron and Kent), or just for two-year associate degree. Four-year programs should be limited to a very few "popular" or less demanding majors.

This tranformation should be able to complete in 5 years or so, when the current term of the university presidency is over. We could appoint one ofthese 4 presidents, or non of them to be the president of the new University of Akron (or The University of Ohio).

This new university will be as strong as OSU. For the State of Ohio, we can then have three major universities in three major area: Akron, Columbus, and Cincinnati, All other state universities should be converted to 2-year preparation campus or community campuses.

The tranformation I suggest would reduce thestate burden to higher education yet mximize the gain for the state economy. The current situation waste WAY too much money to just maintain the daily functions.

The new plan will reduce the cost of administration at least by half by consolidation 4 to 1. These saved money could be used to support key programs such as enineering/medical in Akron, art/science in Kent.

The plan is possible by froze the hiring in non-strategic departments, and most of faculties would retire in 5 years. They could choose to move to other Kent/Akron campus. For the student, they can get dedicated teaching professors for the first two-years, and then world-class professors in their chosen field of study. a win-win-win situation for the state, for the tax payers, for students, for professors. For presidents, they could saty as VP or dean, or dedicated to teaching/research, or leave after current term is over, so not loss for them at all.

Another point: the current education system waste way too much money to educate so-so kids who go to other state.

We need a world class university, attract top scholars and then business to here, and attracted those educated in MI, ID, and PA.
