And why is a new library a waste of time?
Let me guess in your neighborhood it would be a good idea?

Let me explain, since you asked. Lots of new libraries are being built in some very questionable areas. For example, the West Leonard library was never needed, but they built a new state-of-the-art building that only houses just two hundred titles and three computer stations. The homeownership rate in the area is low. It's all income rentals. People who pay nothing in property taxes use the library. Since this location's opening, they've written off nearly three thousand dollars in late fees and costs for non-returned new books. Why? A lot of the area is Black and Hispanic, and they just use the library once or twice, take what they want, return nothing and cannot be found, or simply have no means or care to pay if they violate the rules.

I'm tired of paying for "trash service".

DOES THIS ANSWER YOUR QUESTION???

wow you like to generalize don't you.. Wonder what people think of you...My poor, white single friend uses the library for her 6-year old daughter. People who can't afford a computer or the internet rely on libraries.

It's not generalizing. I've presented fact. Your "poor" friend is most likely not a homeowner, I'm guessing. I have no problem with those who responsibly use a library. Let's just keep the older ones we have and not build new ones at the drop of a hat. The poor aren't paying for it. I am.

Actually, she is. Her a**hole husband left her with two mortgages and 3 children.. a whole other story. But she works herself to death to stay off assistance of any kind. I believe it is generalizing to say that any area is mostly black and hispanic and they borrow once or twice and don't bring anything back. You can't possibly know who is and isn't bringing things back to the library.

This was discussed in a recent meeting of the Friends of the Library. It's public record. See what happens when you get informed and involved in a positive way in your community? I cannot change the facts as they are. I'm sure your friend is qualifying for some kind of benefits - everything from free tax assistance to utility assistance. You just may not know it. I've seen plenty of folks driving new SUVs that have Bridge Cards. The system is flawed and favors those with hard luck stories.
