FIREWORKS SHOULD STILL BE ILLEGAL. During this economy when cities are getting ready to rais taxes they shouldn't be spending money on fireworks. There are other ways of celebrating the forth. Try having a picnic and inviting the homeless free.

MBS Try actually thinking before you act like you know it all. Thinking about the cost of a show and not the effects. Display fireworks events help raise money for the local economy if the event is planned properly. In some big cities like your own. Fireworks shows stimulate spending including spending by travelers to not only local businesses but to vendors as well. Generally the cost of the show is nowhere close to the amount of money spent by visitors.

Yes fireworks are dangerous. But so is everything else in life. 1.5 million people die each year in car accidents yet they have not banned or put extremely strict rules on driving requirements.
4000 people a year die from Alcohol poisoning on the 4th of july. An average of 7 people die each year from Fireworks accidents. Do the math.

This accident was caused by a novice fireworks technician. If you look at the news cast it shows the racks -
A. too close to the spectators.
B. Racks standing side by side have a extremely high rate of tipping if a blowout takes out a support on the whole line of racks.

The fire chief was on site and did not notice this. Any professional technician and their crew would spot this issue only after a few seconds.

Decaturpirotechn ics,
1.5 million people die a year in auto accidents? i believe that's a bit high, NHTSA lists only an average of about 40,000 deaths a year.
but you're right on about the fireworks operation. there's no need to ban fireworks, just need to use them properly.

"We wondered if this was supposed to be happening," Balshy said of the first firework that shot out to the side and went into the crowd.

LOL, really?

Really! Fireworks behind the middle school. Did anyone else think this was a bad idea? So glad I went to Hershey. I'm not even talking about the accident, that's sad and bad enough.'Debris on the cars' blocks away. What were people thinking? I'm not trying to be a Monday morning quarterback but I knew this wasn't a good idea the minute I heard it.

You do realize that 90% of the cities and towns DO NOT pay for the fireworks? They get corporate sponsor to pay for them. It is a win-win for the community they get free fireworks and the corporate sponsor gets a nice tax right off. It all so brings in some tourism money.

During this economy a day of celebration to be with friends and family to enjoy our national holiday and the tradition of fireworks is EXACTLY what's needed.
And just to call you on your bullsh!t, how many homeless people did you have over on the 4th??

Thank God no one was killed. I can't help thinking about just such an accident happening if I go to a fireworks display and I happen to be close to where they are setting them off. It's a very dangerous job and my hat is off to anyone who takes it on, just so others can enjoy the grand display. This was just a freak accident. I am sure those who were setting the fireworks off feel awful that it happened, as do the sponsors of the celebration. Too bad for all concerned. I hope there aren't any lawsuits over it.

Yes its a great thing that nobody was killed. Ive been a display operator for many years and its well known that most accidents happen because of human error when setting up a show. Although I don't blame MBS for his opinion. Most fatalities from fireworks are on the display operators and their crews. But the dangers of fireworks are a decision that us operators make to entertain the masses and its our job to make sure that racks are not placed to close to the spectators. In the event of a catastrophe, A shell should have more then enough room to shoot toward the crowd and detonate at a distance that would not harm anyone. 100 Feet per inch of the shell.
My heart goes out to those injured in this accident.
