I recently got a beagle. I have never had a dog or any other pet for that matter. Someone gave my teenage son a 1 year old beagle for his birthday. At first she was just annoying as I am not an animal lover. I WAS one of those people who would look at you like you were nuts if you were talking like your dog was part of your family. Not anymore lol.
Anyway,if a dog is chocking is there something you can do to help them? She just woke up out of a sound sleep making a noise like a cat coughing up a fur ball. She scared the sht out of me. I tried to open her mouth but she wasn't having that. I took her collar off and patted her back. My son ran and got her water bowl. At first she wouldn't take a drink but then she stopped making the noise and took a drink. Now she is back to sleep and she seems fine. I am not.
I don't even know if there is an animal hospital around here. They should have a 911 for pets. A hotline where they can talk you through an emergency situation. I guess I will be doing research the rest of the night as I can not go back to sleep.

That beagle of yours is probably fine giving the "event" ended and she seems okay. Get connected w/a vet and soon. They generally have an off hour referral svc it they are not on call themselves. Good luck and welcome to the ranks of having a pet!:)

Thank you. I do have an appointment with a vet because she was never fixed. Another thing I was unaware of is that lovely thing that happens with female dogs about every 6 months lol. That happened 2 days after they gave her to him. What a coincidence. At least she already had her rabies and distemper shots. The vet can't get her in until the end of August but she seems fine now thank God.

My 6 month old beagle does the same thing and he's fine. If necessary you can call Central New York Vet in Westmoreland. They have around the clock emergency care and are not as expensive and Rome Vet Hospital.

The last thing you'll get on this sit is useful information call a VET, and get the dog checked by a DR.

That is good to hear. CNY vet is where I have an appointment. They were only $135 for the spay package which includes a check up and Rabies and distemper shots. No discount for her already having the shots but that's okay because they were less expensive than any other. Also I have a FB friend who uses them and is happy with them. On my way to work this morning I noticed that there was an old burger king bag in the back of the van that she apparently got into. She may have been feeling ill. Who knows what was in there. Does your beagle howl a lot when you come home? I had to pick my son up from the movies last night and I took her with me because it was late. She always barks and howls when I come home and if I were the neighbor I wouldn't be too happy with that. I wonder if there is a way to break her of that.

There is nothing like that "beagle howl"...always makes me laugh. She is howling and barking when you come home because she is happy (and in a way grateful) to see you! Talk to your neighbor and see if they are bothered by the howling/barking. Always best to ask them first; takes the edge off from any potential problems w/them. Good luck; keep us posted on how things are going!

Beagle's are natural howlers! Nothing you can do about it.

Beagles are natural bred Rabbit dogs, and untrained, will smell, hunt and howl over everything that crosses through your yard period. Loose, if they get the scent they will take off on the trail and be gone in a flash!! Be careful, they are outdoor dogs, especially when young!!

I appreciate all the feedback. One thing that surprises me is that we always run into other dogs on our nightly walks and she doesn't bark or howl. Go figure. The other dogs usually bark and mine always tries to get to them but never barks. For a beagle she really isn't that bad. She got loose 3 times in one day. Twice she went right to the neighbors door 3 houses down. She loves the kids there. The other time she was knocking on our back door. First she slipped out of her harness, then she broke the long dog cord. After that I used what I had until I had time to run to the store. I used a shoulder strap to an airsoft gun. It was perfect because it had a hook on both ends. Perfect until the neighbor kids were knocking on the front door only 5 minutes later. She broke it right in half. Now I got a heavy duty dog cord that is for dogs up to 125 pounds. I hook it to her collar and harness. Problem solved so far. Knock on wood.
