Population is one thing but this area is poor. Bob & his son Rick Tharrett (owners of Poppa Ricks)had the franchise for 30 years it is very expensive to start up, Start-up Cost:$400,000 to $1,000,000.. http://www.franchise.org/Dairy_Queen_franchis... You have that kind of money for a bad market?
Back when he had a large Military population service jobs were galore because they simply supported the base. Utica never had a dairy queen in fact if you noticed even most of the pizza shops have closed. Things aren't what they used to be someone who works at APAC, Masonic Home or Con Med just don't have much disposable income. Even if they work for the state they are tier 5 or 6 and get paid a fraction of what tier 1-4 did. Revere Copper will be hiring late this Spring I am told and new contract is going to pay new employees $5 dollars an hour less than established people. Imagine that is $10,000 a yr less just because you came in the door after such a date. They are also still going to be one of the better employers as far as pay. They did away with the pension years ago and you have to pay 25% of health insurance premium. I am told new people on lower pay tier will have to pay 50%. Just like General Motors two tier the higher tier employees were hired at $28 an hour and could go up to $40 depending on the job. While the low tier gets paid a flat $14 an hour. Same job for at least $28,000 a year less. Is it any wonder why anyone that has money won't spend it and anyone that doesn't have will not get it. People under 40 are said to be the Paul Ryan and Sara Palin lost children. They won't need Pensions, Social Security or Medicare because they have have Face Book,I Phones and are easily divided so it is easy to keep them divided and oppressed. If they are sick remember what Sara Palin said "Jesus will cure you if he wants you cured"
newsflash! Revere is NOT even working a full 40 hour shift anymore. they took away 5 hous. They were NEVER the highest paid in the city. Strip streel pays way more! the revere union did them in. it is only a matter of time before they close

So where were these tons of hospital employees for Friendly's?
If you want the truth, Friendly's was far from fabulous, was too expensive and the service was much too slow. We get 30 mins-- that's it.
Happy now?
