I was in a car accident about 2 years ago and was in the hospital for about 2 1/2 weeks. I was on pain medication for about 6-8 months after for back/neck pain. After many visits to pain management and chiropractors, the relief has since mostly subsided. I am now additicted to pain pills and I take them every day even if I don't have pain. I know I'm abusing them and I really want to stop but I'm afraid I won't be able to or it's gone on too long to be able to. I don't want this publicly known by my Dr. or my family. They have no idea. I buy them from anyone who sells them. I'm taking up to 10-12 hydrocodone or perks a day. I've tried to stop and I went through withdrawals terribly. I need help and if I was to admit myself into a rehab place, I'm quite certain my job would know as well as my family. It's very embarrassing for me. I also don't want my children knowing but I have a feeling they might know. They just haven't said anything. I've read up on it and most answers are going to rehab. What can I do to stop without going to rehab? Please help. Henry

There are a few doctors around in the utica rome area that can prescribe suboxone to relieve the withdrawal symptoms, and then ween you off of the suboxone. Dr. Taylor is one. She is not taking patients, but if you call and explain your situation to the supervisor, they might take you in. It's up to the supervisor of that particular office. Her name was Kristen when I started there, but I'm not sure. Worth a try. Suboxone is good because it makes you feel well again, but does not get you high. No one will know you're on it, and it isn't detected in drug tests. Other than a rehab, if you want to get clean, you should go this route. Of course, that would have to mean you go to Rome Medical Group and try to getthem to take you in as a new patient for Taylor. She is not only a suboxone doctor, so people will not think it's weird. She is just a primary care dr. There's also one in herkimer too.. he is Rabinowitz and is always taking new patients if you have insurance. However, he is pretty weird and by the book - he will be asking you to bring your empty containers back to count them and doing checks unannounced - call you and say come in and take a urine test now or you are out of here. Taylor doesn't do that. Aside from these options, and getting clean cold turkey, it is very hard and your symptoms will be flu like for about a week. You will not be able to go to work and if you did do it this way, I would get some benzodiazapenes to get you through for the anxiety. The physical detox is hell but you have to do it sooner or later.. suboxone just puts it off til you can be ready or have a plan. Hope that helped.

Thank you for your help. I also have another question. If I was to go to another Dr to get the suboxins (sp) would she be able to go into a computer or any files of some sort to see that I already have a primary Dr? Should I just tell her that I don't have a Dr at all? This is good because I really don't want to go anywhere around Rome, out of town is good for this I think. I'm nervous about coming off of them as I think if someone has them and offers, I'll just take it and start back up. I'm not sure I'll have the will power to do it and that's what I need. It's to the point now that I don't even get the 'high' feeling from them, I just take them so I don't withdrawal now. Some days I take a lot so I do get that feeling. Like today, I woke around 7:30 and since 8:15ish I've taken 7 10's 3 of them were 5's and I don't feel a thing and I want to take more. I didn't even have back or neck pain today and I slept well.

Yes it does. I try to ween myself off sometimes but then I start back up again. I could take a handful and not feel anything, that's how bad it's getting. I feel ashamed every time I take them but I'm scared to stop. I'm afraid if something happens and I feel pain again I'll just go back to them. I need some support and I have nobody to tell. They're cheap and readily available anytime I want them so it's very easy to get them. Anytime a supplier has them they send a text and it's done, I have a full bottle. I really hate myself for not taking them as prescribed back then and now abusing them as if they're just a sugar candy. It's all I think about, when I'm close to running out of them, I get nervous, when I have a full bottle I feel relaxed and not a care in the world and when I take them I feel good but ashamed. I just want to be normal again and I tell myself all the time, this is the last bottle and this is the bottle I'm going to ween myself off of. I don't.

No suboxone is extremely controlled and now they have a state database so they are paying attention to who is prescribing what to who and how often. I'm pretty sure you would have to switch your primary doctor to your sub dr. because you have follow-ups with them, they prescribe your other medication you need, and if you are going to more than 1 primary care doctor, your insurance is not going to pay. I mean, I'm saying all of this as if you have insurance. I'm assuming you do. If you don't, none of them rules apply and you can go to whatever doctor and keep your own doctor but if you have insurance, they will know, they will flag you, and you will be asked about it - they are not going to pay for you to have a doctor here and a doctor there. They will pay to have a dr. here and a psychiatrist there, but normally a psych would not prescribe the suboxone. The primary care dr. would. And there are not many. Taylor, Rabinowitz in Herkimer, and maybe one in Utica but I am not sure . If you go to Rabinowitz, yes, he will be able to tell. He will know everything about your Rx history and if you cash in scripts from anyone else other than him, you are out. No strike one, strike two. You are just out. He is a stickler. He doesn't mess around, and he checks everything twice. Taylor on the other hand, she has so many patients that she can barely remember your name or anything else you've told her. But I don't know if Rome Medical would check. I know they ask for your records to be released from your pc to them if you do go to them. The thing is, if you're not ready, don't even start. They are not going to give you a second chance if you keep messing up. They have a million people trying to get clean and you are a dime a dozen to them. Plus, they will make you go to a counselor in the beginning, if you don't have one, get one. That way they don't send you to CRC to take a million dumb classes and drug tests and group sessions a week.

I suggest Dr. Taylor. She's the most laid back doctor I've ever been to, and hippa protects your privacy, so no one has to know. Tons of people go to RMG.. There's a lot of dr's there so it's not obvious. Go to Rabinowitz and you'll be kicked out within 6 months guaranteed and he runs his mouth about everyone in his rundown office from the untrained staff to the junkies that are in and out, and totally complains about his job at the prison all day and all night. total pain in the ass

Dr. Taylor is in Utica but you're not sure if she's taking new patients right now? I will look her up and keep her info noted. How long will the withdrawal feelings last if I try to do this on my own without a Dr? Is it like coming off of an alcohol addiction to where I could possibly have a heart attack?

No she's in rome. You will have to ask for the supervisor and tell your situation and hope she feels bad for you and takes you in. Withdrawals start between 8-24 hours after your last "pill" and will last a good 3-5 days of flu like symptoms that are about 100 times worse. You will be vomiting, diahrhea cold sweats, unable to sleep/eat definitely unable to work. they should start to subside after a week but you wont feel like yourself for at least a few weeks - as far as psychological cravings and just not feeling right. If you can get through the first 4 days without relapsing, I would be surprised, but it has been done. If you can get your hands on any valium or klonopin that would help a little to keep your anxiety level down. Withdrawals are not usually life threatening but all of that depends on you and your body - everyone is different. I wouldn't worry about a heart attack unless you have heart problems already. Just prepare to be Very Very Uncomfortable - and take a week off.

You can beat the addiction yourself if you have the willpower. It's called titrating. Figure out how many you are taking now per day. Then you simply reduce that amount by 1 per week. Yes, it'll take awhile. It sure beats jail time. I've been taking them for 6 years now, and will have to for the rest of my life. If you don't have the willpower then I'd suggest professional help. The worst that will happen is usually pain in your joints and restlessness in your limbs, especially at night. Some people say acupuncture is good, too. You must do something. To keep taking them is illegal, unhealthy, and costly.
