what is the key to getting a carry permit in New York State, I understand there is one Judge that approves or dis-approves all applications. I have no criminal record and am a Vietnam Vet.

Oneida county does not give full carry unless you are going for a security guard position. own a buisness with lots of money on hand. I got mine in Dutchess county when I lived there and they give full carry, then I just transfered it to oneida.

You applied for a carry and received it? I want a carry but have been told that if I put down personel protection etc it will be turned down and I should put down sport or some shit like that, any advice

Don't know what to tell you Friend. When I applied for my permit I had been a retired PO from Baltimore MD for about 5 years, but I don't think that would have had any influence on it. NY is different than other states, or is it a county issue? I do know it seems to be different in every county guess its up to the one who approves it. Really different than MD.

Go to Oneida County office building in Utica, I think its on the 6th floor. Dan Sullivan runs the show. Pick up the paperwork, and follow the directions. As long as you don't have a history of doing the wrong things you should be able to get one in a few months. All permits issued today are carry conceled because the obvious, is they don't want some cowboy walking around with his side arm hanging out for everyone to see!! Target shooting hunting, and hiking are the 3 most favorable reasons to have a handgun, if these don't fit your profile, maybe you don't really need one?

Is there a way to amend a permit? Mine is stamped hunting and target only.

This is what I thought could happen but according to the above post, all permits now issued are carry, conceled. I have no problems and have never been arrested, veteran etc so I don't anticipate a problem but I was just curious about the carry permit. PS You need to take the Handgun certification course (Gander Mountain offers it) before you can even pick up the paperwork from Sullivan. You need the certificate to give him at that time. Thanks for your input.

Yes, all permits are carry coneled, but they have different restrictions. The open carry allows you to carry anywhere except bars, banks, federal buildings, etc... the other is hunting, fishing, camping and hiking which only allows you to carry in certain circumstances. I asked about getting an open carry permit and Dan Sullivan bascically told me it was a waste of my time without a valid reason. And that a valid reason to me was probably a valid reason to the judge.

I would suggest going on the NRA website. You can get into a class fairly quickly beside the above mentioned.

Are you preparing for an overseas military operation that will provide a high liklihood of your participation in combat actions in support of our country's prosecution of the war on terror?

I made the mistake of going to deer field it was horable. they make you think that if you take their personal protection class for another. 175 dollars that you will be able to get a unrestricted permit no problem. They are wrong they just want your money when I went to go give the permit office my personal protection certificate he did not take it or even care that I had it.

Are cops cowboys? The reason for open carry is simple, Its like a stops sign = I have the means to protect my self and others with out the possibility of confrontation. Concealed is to keep SOME morons from making people nervous. Their are pro and cons to both. I have full carry for twenty years never had a problem and carry outside often , I believe if you dont qualify for a for full carry maybe you should not own a pistol.Political decisions are more dangerous and have killed more people, yet rarely does the politician own a gun but commands respect and death from those who oppose.

Oh, aren't you just the elitist little snob. "Fine for me, but not for thee!", huh. THAT is the attitude that makes people nervous.

And yes. Some cops ARE cowboys. Perhaps that includes you.

they told all of us not to put protection. That is why I wanted mine so I figured if I didn't get it than I wouldn't have a use for it.
I put personal perfection and I'm in Oneida county and I had no problem. 1 year later I had my carry permit no restrictions. I'm sure if everyone starts putting personal they won't get it but you won't know if you don't try and there is no loop holes or anything else you can do to make sure you get a concealed pistol permit
