I remember a time when good customer service started with a pleasant attitude. When a merchant actually cared about his customers and their needs. Of course nobody in their right mind expects to be treated with disrespect, or rudely. I have been treated rudely by Gary before, and passed it off as somebody having a bad day. That was my mistake. I guess I try to see the good in people. Today, a friend of mine was actually told, "F%&k you" by Gary when he tried to get a referral for a guitar repair. Why? Is there any excuse for this behavior? Seems to me that Gary is a rude, arrogant, pompous idiot with no concern for customers. As a drummer, I have made many purchases at Gary's, but that all changes today. I'll walk to Big Apple in New Hartford, or Guitar Center in Syracuse before I'll drive to Gary's here in Rome. And I'll be sure to spread the word about the way Gary treats his customers.

Too bad you never had the opportunity to attend school yourself. Ask your kids for some spelling & grammar tips. Gary's a pro. I've been buying there since around 1987. He knows his products and his industry. My experience with the other guys has been dismal. Gary gives to every worthy cause that asks. I know because he was very generous when I came to him for a donation. I'm glad to know him and to support his business for over 20 years. No bitch on topix is going to change that.

My child plays the trumpet. I never really cared for Gary. I can't say exactly why because I really don't know. I just get turned off every time I go in there. It could be the fact that he always bad mouths other places. I have never even brought up any other places to him. This past September I went in for a mute cup. You would think he would have stocked up on such items being that time of year. He rudely said he only had two in stock to begin with and that everyone wanted them that week. It wasn't what he said as much as the way he said it. I drove to Oneida music and had no problem getting one. It was also cheaper than Gary was going to charge to order one. I will take the extra time in my busy schedule to drive to Oneida from now on.

Maybe it's because your meds need to be adjusted. Gary stocks more inventory in the first 10 feet of his store than Oneida has in their entire building. You should be "muted".

I agree with the previous poster who says that it isn't so much WHAT Gary says as it is the WAY he says it. He acts very arrogant and his manner of speech and body language prove it.

As for the people who post from "POTSDAM", it's a re-directed routing from Road Runner servers. It seems to affect some people, but not others, but that's another topic.

Back to Gary. He has told me that he doesn't worry about matching other competitors prices. He doesn't see price matching as an effective business technique.

I'm a drummer, and he doesn't carry nearly the inventory or quality that Big Apple does. I bought my Mapex Meridian kit at Big Apple along with my Gibraltar rack, neither of which, Gary has in stock. When I asked Gary about ordering a rack 2 years ago, he flat out told me "No I don't order racks."
I walked into big apple, and not only did they have a rack on the sales floor, they also held it for a day for me without so much as a penny to hold it. I had the cash the next day and they stayed true to their word. Somehow, I doubt that I would've received such good customer service from Gary.

I knew him when he was playing in the Holiday Inn. He's rude and arrogant.

Thats my name and I stopped going there years ago because of his rudeness. Poor atitude for someone who has been in business so long.

Remember Jim Swann? Ah there was a nice local music store.

Also I recomend Marc @ Big Apple he is a great guy to deal with.

Honestly, I haven't gone back since he was rude to me last year. That's how I am, if I don't like the service I don't go back. Big Apple is so much better. Those guys will answer questions, let you play, and will bargain with you. Gary's is just convenient because it is in Rome, but I think both guys are jerks and could use a slap from their momma!

Experts in their occupations often face jealousy. The guy's been in business for 30 years while others try again & again in Rome only to sneak out in the middle of the night.
Gary's often offers some very cool vintage instruments online.

Lol. I get the point you are trying to make, but these people are ordering online, they don't have to deal with their rude attitudes. People get turned off by them being such jerks and people, like myself, will not go back because of it.

I'm really surprised to hear this. We dealt with Gary for years while my son was growing up and learning to play saxophone. Gary helped us choose instruments, accessories and find instructors. He always was happy to order music or whatever else we needed. I suppose he might have changed over time, but the man you describe sure doesn't sound like the Gary I remember.

Nothing has changed there. My sound system is awesome. I bought nearly all the components from Gary. Price was better than mail order and he gave me tons of help when it came to learning how to set up the gain and all about signal path. I couldn't get the New Hartford guys to even wait on me! Sorry haters. It's you that I don't buy.

There, now you have my name. AL... I don't question his competence or knowledge. I am questioning common decency and attitude. He is rude. Plain and simple. I don't care how much he knows, it's how he presents himself. He's an arrogant person, and for a local business, that could be a deal breaker. Eventually, somebody will come to town and give better service.
