Medal of Honor
Honorable Military

I just don't think Douglas MacArthur deserved the Medal of Honor. I think President Roosevelt with the concurrence of Gen Marshall gave the Medal of Honor to MacArthur to protect him from accusations of cowardice when he abandoned the Philippines. This really bothers me since the MoH is not given very often and should be only given to those who deserve it.

It's amazing because MacArthur would not support General Wainwright's medal of honor even though MacArthur chickened out and left the Philippines and ran off to Australia while Wainwright got to spend the rest of the war in a Japanese POW camp and had to survive the infamous Bataan Death march. 70 years later this still pisses me off. I don't have much time left but the Congress to cancel MacArthur's Medal of Honor.

MacArthur really screwed his legacy during the early days of the Korean war. His ignoring of the Chain of Command and his foolish attempt to bring the Chinese into the war showed what an egotistical moron he really was. "I shall return" alright - He should have added "... once it was safe". Wainwright was 10 times the general and far more modest and courageous. Wainwright did eventually receive the Medal of Honor for his courage during the Bataan Death march but no thanks to Gen Coward - I mean MacArthur. I agree cancel is MoH. He's dead anyway any it'll make those who really deserved the Medal of Honor in better company.

Admiral Nimitz was far more effective in the Pacific during WWII and he did not get the MoH. He also did not run when the Japs came. He stood his ground and kicked their ass. My guess is just like today politics was the way of the world back then as well. Finally a post that is worthy of discussion as opposed to most of the posts which are idiotic.

MacArthur was overrated as a General. The only reason why they broke up the Pacific Theater into two separate theaters was so MacArthur could have the lead along with Nimitz. Most of the Pacific Theater is water (the domain of the Navy and Marine Corps) so why have an Army General in the mix? Because MacArthur was politically well connected and it all caught up to him when Truman fired him at the beginning of the Korean War.

Bradley and Eisenhower were more than willing to go to the Pacific after VE day and help MacArthur but MacArthur was such a sycophant he was willing to risk the lives of millions of American troops rather than improve the leadership and develop a viable plan for the invasion of Japan. Thank god for the atomic bomb or the US and its allies would have suffered millions of casualties. All for some lunatic general. I am willing to lead the call for revocation of MacArthur's Medal of Honor.

MacArthur has no connection to Norfolk VA yet that is where he is buried (also the location of his library and museum). I expect this politics also.

MacArthur was retired until he was recalled just before the US entered WWII. Not sure he wasn't already senile so perhaps this explains his instability.

I have studied MacArthur's life and found him to be a mamma's boy. His mom had political connections and paved the way for him every step of the way. Even after he retired (between WWI and WWII) his mom got the Department of War to send him to Southeast Asia which led him to command part of the Pacific Theater. I can't say whether he did a good or bad job but without political connections he never would have had the opportunity.

MacArthur should have stayed and participated in the Bataan Death march. Because he chickened out a man of honor would have refused the medal? He did not and therefore is not a man of honor.

I never liked or respected MacArthur. Franklyn is the president that awarded him (through Congress) the Medal of Honor. Once I became president I fired his @ss the first chance I had. He was very disrespectful to me. While I did not take it personally Generals (even 5 star generals) have to respect the president and the constitution. At the beginning of the Korean War I thought he had changes or that I might have misjudged him during WWII but it did not take long to realize I judged him correctly and ended his career once and for all. I made the old soldier fade away and am damn proud of myself for doing so.

Right after the Pearl Harbor attack I ordered MacArthur to execute the Rainbow plan and MacArthur did nothing. Because of the we were not able to defend the Philipeens and 100's of thousands of innocents were killed. Though I have been dead for quite some time I am still discussed by his receipt of the Medal of Honor.

I agree with Harry. One of my biggest mistakes was to give Mac the medal of honor (even though the congress awards it). Mac's mom had powerful political connections. I should have left him on Bataan.

The reason we got stuck on Bataan is because even after MacArthur knew about Pearl Harbor he did nothing to protect US interests in the Asia-Pacific. The Japanese attacked our Aircraft on the ground and our ships at the pier. By the time he did anything more than half of our military assets were destroyed and that led directly to the Bataan death march for which I was a part. When I found out that he got the Medal of Honor after I was released I got sick. Admiral Kimmiel at least go fired even though nobody thought we'd be attacked without the nips first declaring war. It would mean a lot to us (the few remaining survivors of Bataan) if the Congress would see fit to resind the medal.

MASH used to make fun of MacArthur. Perhaps the sitcom was more reality than comedy.
