Bob, what years were you there? I remember two Nancys, a Pam, a Shawn who was only there briefly in 1964. She was friends with Susan Dutcher and Kathy Dillon. Do you remember either of them? I don't remember a Rosemarie or Shiela. I don't remember a staff member named Buffy either. I was there from 1959 - 1964, then again from 1965 - 1967.

This is about the only place I find that even acknowledges the existence
of the old insane asylum. Seems it was swept under the rug because it
was a shameful place. Back in the 1940s/50s they didn't know much at all about mental disorders. They did use this place for the criminally insane. In with that population they also put anybody else that was a never to be
released patient. The place was deplorable. I can speak only because my
grandmother died there. My mother used to visit her mother there and was
crushed by what her mother had to deal with. Her mother was in a motor
vehicle accident back around 1914. The accident left her with glass embedded in her brain that they did not have the ability to remove back
then. She went on to get married, have children, and live with some difficulty for many years. The glass eventually moved around and messed her up enough that she could no longer function properly. They
determined she would never be able to live outside of a hospital. My
family could not manage to get her help due to finances. She became
a ward of the state. They determined that she should spend the rest of
her years in Marcy Insane Asylum. There were many people there who
should never have been there. They didn't understand as we do now the
differences in types of mental malfunctions. Today even if she were the
ward of the state they would never put her in a mental hospital. Definitely not one with criminally insane persons. It was a shame but I
can't hold the state or anybody responsible for what they did not know at the time. I feel someday future generations will look back at the surgery we do today and think we were barbaric. I hope so anyway.

How sad for your grandmother! When I was placed there as a child in 1959, there were many autistic children that were sent to other facilities in 1960 after we moved to the new building that would be known as Crane Hill. They became much more selective about admitting kids to Crane Hill than previously...less troubled, less violent.

CRANE HILL SCHOOL was the
HOUSE OF THE CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL. but also
remember that CRANE HILL SCHOOL got It's name from
THE CRANE FAMILY CEMETERY that's on river road.
this cemetery was also called CRANE HILL long before
the school was ever thought of. now that's creepy. and the MARCY ASYLUM was also part of the
DEVIL'S TRIANGLE of the Mohawk valley. with the former UTICA LUNATIC ASYLUM or what was the
UTICA STATE HOSPITAL being the lower right corner and MARCY STATE ASYLUM or HOSPITAL being the
top. and the former ROME STATE SCHOOL being the
left corner of this DEVIL'S TRIANGLE. just take a look at
the locations on a map of these former asylums. and I think that you will agree that it formed a triangle. it's were lots of peaple used to disappear.
and yes I'm a fan of STEPHEN KING !! and here's another thing to remember it wasn't
QUALITY CARE. it was QUALITY SCARE !!

and the food there wasn't nouthing to write home about
somebody once refered to it as DOG FOOD. so it made
me think about a brand that was called KEN O RATION anybody remember. so I came up with this one
CRANO-RATION or CRANE-HILL RATION. give your dog
that killer edge !! are how about this as a fictional story
for this place or any outher places like this
MAYHEM STATE HOSPITAL. ware not all there takes on
a whole new meaning. it would be like HANNIBAL and
CUJO on a grand scale. sounds kind of scary doesn't it.

to mike of syracuse I knew that marcy was a civil mental hospital when I was there. you say that marcy had the criminal insane back in the 1940s. did the old marcy ever have a perimator fence around it with gates. cause I didn't see any indacations that it ever did have a perimeter fence around it. I know that the old utica asylum had a perimeter fence around it. it was a Roth iron fence that they took down. I always thought that most criminaly insane asylums would have some kind of fence around them. we did have a fence going part way around the crane hill campus. but it wasn't for security. it was for keeping peaple from cutting thrue the property. as the gates was never locked
