<quoted text>As a teacher I want to thank you for what you wrote. I'm in my 6th year teaching 6th grade and my pay is about $46,000. For all the teacher haters on here I say spend one day with your child in his/her classroom...you would probably be amazed. I don't work a 6hr. day it's more like 8.5hr. day and usually a couple hrs. on Saturday. Lately there is so much state mandated stuff that we have to do because the state is always trying to reinvate the wheel...we all wish we could just teach. Half of my day is acting as a referee or a ring leader of a three ring circus. Gone are the days when you were punished for talking back, and that would be considered nothing today. We deal with foul mouths, drugs, fights, hunger, parents in jail, and the list goes on & on. If you don't have the patience of a saint, you better not be a teacher and trust me most don't do it for the pay. I will end this with a cartoon that is on my desk of a picture of a child from the past bringing home a bad grade and the parents tell him he is punished. The other side shows a child today bringing home a bad grade and the parents go to the school and harass the teacher about their childs grade.
Get a different job.

Full time pay for part time work is a thing of the past. The pay scale and benefit package that these teachers have is unsustainable. The test scores and graduation rates are deplorable. Privatize the entire school system. Current teachers and staff would have to apply for their positions. Contracts would have to be renegotiated. The school day could be extended to 8-5, year round. Teachers in disagreement with the new system would be free to seek other employment. New York tax rates are so high people are losing their homes because they can't afford the taxes. TIME FOR CHANGE

Wouldn't you love to see what the crybabies on here jobs are( if they have one)? DO NOT judge others jobs unless you've walked in their shoes. I give them credit and have been blessed to have wonderful teachers for my children( who now are in college).By the ignorance and pathetic attitudes here I would never want to deal with parents like the ones here. No wonder your children get nowhere with a pathetic example to lead them like your negative selves. Be a parent and good example for those children not complain on this site about a problem that is most likely your fault.

All the more reason to extend the school hours from 8-5 and make it year round schooling. There are a lot of tax paying citizens working two jobs, including nights and weekends so that they can afford to pay the ever increasing SCHOOL TAXES. The system is broken.

Not only do they spend the time in the school, they also have to spend time at home grading tests, homework, essays, etc.

Why waste your time on here arguing about 8 hours of work or not. Obviously those people aren't teachers or they would be working during the hours that they are busy complaining. They must have a much better job where they can comment on topix at any time of the day. Oh wait...maybe they are on their break or having lunch. They are of course allowed to have both a break and a lunch, but teachers should work 8 hours per day without either. They probably don't earn as much as the "wealthy" teachers who are easily $40,000 in debt due to the education that they are required to have in order to become a certified teacher. Just an idea...go back to school for 6 years, become a certified teacher, then you too can make a "full year salary" for only a "half year of work." Stop complaining about teachers, none of you who have a decent job got where you are today without at least one teacher making a positive impact on your life.

Amen. These idiots on here who are downing teachers have "no clue" half of them should go back to school to about the 4th grade and learn the difference between their/there and than/then. However, I'm sure the ignorance was passed down by their parents to put the blame on the teachers, and the ignorant cycle continues. Why is it that one of the most inspirational females on tv (Oprah) always praised teachers, but we (society) doesn't bat an eyelash at famous athletes, musicians, or famous people who are famous for..not quite sure(Kardasians) but have a problem with a teacher's salary? Just saw Michael Jordan's 2nd wedding on tv with over 2000 guests. That makes me sick, not a teacher's salary!
