Bigger Picture, clearly you have never been outside the vast wasteland that Central NY has become. I have been in all 50 states, impoverished Caribbean islands, Brazil and Guyana, West Africa, China, Mexico and the old Soviet Union. I have seen poverty. Rome is not only a moribund economy, it is a depressing cultural death zone. Rome, plain and simple, sucks ass.

I'm on the road every other week. I've been to them all and Rome isn't even nearly as bad as most of the dark corners of any metropolis. it's the people. it's their piss poor attitudes. nothing is wrong with the city. it's all about a mentality shift and self empowerment. I don't know why the hatebreed toxicity is so venomous and everywhere around here, but it is. For no real reason. They thrive on wallowing in misery of themselves and others. Complaining they don't have any Turkey when they've got a ham under their arm.

Bigger Picture <-- an island in an ocean of crap

I suppose complaining is an indication of laziness -- it's easier than doing something positive to improve our community.

if someone doesn't see that as a problem (government jobs) well they obviously don't know any better.

While "complaining" might not be as effective as all your contributions it does serve a valuable purpose. Many gov. officials ( I cringe at the thought of addressing them as leaders) read topix. This is forum is useful in getting info to these officials. Your attempt (complaining) at equating voicing ones opinion to that of laziness speaks for itself. Redundant.

Your point is well taken.

When I complain about local government, I write directly to the appropriate officials or speak at public meetings. They know who I am and they know my position on the many issues. When I complain here, it's to educate others in hope they will agree with my views.

For the most part, officials think the system is perfect the way it is now -- it's working great for them. I don't and I let them know, backing up my opinion with data whenever possible. I'm not sure that qualifies as lazy.

It is far from lazy and greatly appreciated! Many taxpayers and gov. officials are completely unaware of how broken the gov. wheel is. Apathy and ignorance are all too common. Opinions, data , figures and facts, in my opinion, are exactly what is needed. The more the better. The more accurate the better.

You get it, free speech. Speak out against the broken wheel

I call it the Iron Ring of Oligarchy. Lay these four points out in a circle for a graphical representation:

1. We have career bureaucrats overseeing public sector employees
2. Public sector employees spend their careers feeding career public sector union organizers
3. Public sector unions feed career politicians with lavish political contributions
4. Career politicians oversee career bureaucrats

Where do the people fit in? We pay taxes to drive the entire machine that works against us in many cases. What could possibly go wrong?

That's why privatizing is the answer, well for the most part.
