of 363 metro areas in the US analyzed by the Wall St. Journal, Rome is next to the worst in economic growth at # 362. What a hell hole.

The Washington Post has Utica/Rome listed at #354 out of 363. Terrible. Welfare recipients, and economical growth just don't mix.

oooOOOOooo. You say FIVVEEE new restaurants? FIVE? Well f me running, Mr. Bigger picture. I thank your god every day when I wake up that there are the people like you that look at everything so positively. Maybe a new dollar general will go in to put a little extra cayenne peppa into this economical power house and really get this place going. The mouth breathing- welfare receiving, over consuming suck bag race that composes 85% of this town need some place else to stuff their face with a slightly different warm meat/cheese dish since their options are weighing so low. That is not economic growth.

Rome has no economy. Also no government jobs don't count since those are parasites off from the tax payer which obviously we need less government jobs

Oh Ya? Have you ever even traveled out of NY State in your life? Been to every major city?

The extremely impoverished south? didn't think so. This place is like this for one reason. the toxic personalities and constant hate of the people who live here. it's in the 4th generation of ignorance now, and you others like you are 99% of the reason that this place gets a bad rap. So much to be proud of is at your disposal but you can't see past your own nose.

Toxic personalities and constant hate are exactly why the NEXT MAYOR needs to be someone as far removed from the" typical Rome nonsense" as possible. No more "insiders".

There are a number of factors affecting the economic growth or lack thereof in Rome. Rome does have an economy, it's just spiraling further into the abyss of negative growth. Once any city starts to lose ground in terms of tax base, opportunity growth and job creation, it's almost impossible to stop it. First, money goes where money is. There's no money in Rome. Second, opportunity goes where opportunity is. There's little if any opportunity in Rome NY. Third, high tech goes where high tech is...true there is some high tech, but it's all based on one entity, the Air Force research Lab. which has spun off some great small businesses, that are eventually bought out by the big boys like ITT, BAE etc. Most of those larger aerospace corps only have a satellite office here due to the fact that they have one or two large AF contracts from the Lab. If those programs dry up, the companies are gone. So high tech only stays as long as there is $$ flowing from Uncle Sam. Manufacturing is almost dead. Energy is too expensive up here. You can thank the 'monopoly', National Grid for that. Just think, they charge to deliver the electricity and natural gas and that's how they make the big profits. There are some very successful companies in the area. Let's take 'Bonide' for example off of Rt 233. Does anyone out there know about that company? They sell their stuff (pesticides, herbicides, etc.) nation wide. Started by a Chemist with vision and guts, many many years ago. No one quits that company so there are few openings unless someone retires. There's ACE Hardware that has managed to stay in business against the big boys by providing 'service' when you go there. I like ACE Hardware. There are other businesses too. American Alloy is going strong and so is Oneida Manufacturing out by the old airport. So there are businesses that are doing reasonably well. However, there is little opportunity for our youth and as such, little growth in new ideas and visions. In addition, the crime rate is increasing as are the welfare rolls. People with money and ideas do not invest in areas which have a great percentage of the populace on assistance as well as a crime rate that continues to climb. The area was also 'controlled' by old money. That control goes back at least 75 years and the families that shut out the growth many years back so they could control the work force, created a situation that still exists today. Old money, old thinking,
etc. Add to the aforementioned the unions that exist in the Upstate NY area that are absent from many southern areas and you have a catalyst for failure. Add to all of the above, the super imposed layers of political mismanagement and you can be assured that disaster will not be left to chance. My idea is to turn all of Upstate NY into a large cemetery. We could take the departed form all over the state and country for that matter at a very reasonable and reduced burial fee.
A family could chose the type landscape they would like for their loved one. We have mountains, rivers, forests, meadows etc. NY folks could also provide perpetual care of the graves for a yearly fee. Thus jobs! A few billion families paying a small yearly fee of lets say $100.00 would provide sufficient income to hire hundreds of thousands of upstate NY people to maintain the grave sites. Also, by taking the departed form other States, those States would have prime property to utilize for other purposes. Actually we could have those States pay NY for the service of freeing up their property for more lucrative businesses. Naturally there are those who, like in Rome only want to be buried in 'their'
Churches 'Saint. Whoever' cemetery so we create a 'Saint This' and a 'Saint That'. Naturally we insure areas for those of the Jewish faith, and the ever increasing Muslim faith. Hey, there's money to be made folks. Even the existing 'Rome Cemetery', which is in financial trouble could become solvent again! I love this friggin' town !!

I don't need to visit the impoverished south. I have seen Rome NY. Illiteracy, obesity, drug addiction, welfare parasites, slum housing, no new construction of any kind, decaying "downtown", no economy whatsoever. Hell on earth.

Soooo no then? you haven't lived life anywhere else or experienced anything outside of your little bubble and TV world?

it definitely plays that way, and guess what? It is your/that mentality that is the problem. Always with the judgement and complaints, never with the support or a solution. You'll die in misery because you've never truly lived.

your definition of urban decay wouldn't stand up on any real scale compared to truly impoverished regions. just a little fantasy so you can keep spinning your hatebreed.

Bigger Picture, clearly you have never been outside the vast wasteland that Central NY has become. I have been in all 50 states, impoverished Caribbean islands, Brazil and Guyana, West Africa, China, Mexico and the old Soviet Union. I have seen poverty. Rome is not only a moribund economy, it is a depressing cultural death zone. Rome, plain and simple, sucks ass.
