Four people were hospitalized after their car was rear-ended by a distracted police officer on South James Street Monday afternoon.

Police said Officer Sharon L. Rood was stopped in a line of traffic behind John W. MacArthur Jr., 36, of Hooksett, New Hampshire, in the left turning lane on South James Street at Erie Boulevard. Police said the green arrow turned on at about 3:35 p.m., and the line of traffic started turning, but MacArthur didnít make the turn in time.

Police said the green arrow turned off and MacArthur hit the brakes on his 2012 Volkswagen sedan. Authorities said Rood was using her mobile data terminal in her 2011 Ford suburban at the time, and was "inattentive to the roadway." The police suburban rear-ended MacArthurís sedan.

MacArthur complained of back pain, and he was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital, authorities said. He was joined by Regina MacArthur, 36, Jonah C. MacArthur, 3, and Arianna I. Olkovikas, 14, all of whom complained of neck pain, police said.

Officer Rood also complained of shoulder pain, but she was not hospitalized, authorities said.

No tickets were issued.

Give me a break. They were probably treated and released. I am sure the police have insurance for accidents. That is what this was...an accident. I feel bad for the injured people, don't get me wrong, but police don't get tickets. I am sure she got reprimanded and she is probably embarrassed by the whole thing. I am sure she feels bad too. I don't know about Rome police but sheriff deputies lose vacation days if they damage a vehicle. Yes it sucks that we get tickets and they don't but it is a perk of the job. It really isn't much considering they have to put up with all the scumbags on a daily basis. She does her job well. I will defend her BUT had it been her husband I would be btching too. lol

Funny cause if I crashed my car while using a cell phone it would of been a big deal. Maybe they should only use those things while parked.

Just proves that the cops and their family's are above the law. And where I work at, my wife isn't allowed to be employes due to security reasons. Why should she be allowed? Look what went in between the Shelly and her husband.

Please use proper English. I really didn't understand your post. Try rereading before you hit the post button. If you were working at say Walmart distribution and got into a forklift accident would you get a ticket? This is her job. Yes I do agree that they should not use those devices while driving. Think about it though, what is a ticket? It is a pain in the azz that causes you to miss a days work and cost you money. She probably got reprimanded like I said before. You do not know what trouble she got in. She may have lost a days pay or more. I am sure they have protocol for this. A ticket is the police way of keeping us in line. They have different ways of keeping their own in line.

Just my opinion, but, the concept of "us" and "them" frightens me. Lead by example. If she had to do her job and respond to her monitor I believe her superiors would understand why the traffic conditions forced her to respond 30 seconds latter. It seems to be poor judgement to do what see did in stop and go traffic. I believe she is a good officer with a good record. None of us are without mistakes, but the concept of "us" and "them sit seems unjust.

I didn't know he was the one who allowed that guy to escape. I always knew he was an azz who doesn't know how to do his job though. I believe she is a good cop though and should not be judged for her husbands incompetence. Yes what she did was reckless I agree. Other than this stupid lapse in judgement (which we ALL have from time to time) I believe she does her job properly. She is a fair and honest cop. I think the newspaper (if you can even call it that) should not have worded it the way they did. They were trying to stir up trouble. I do not believe that any police officer anywhere in the country has ever gotten a traffic ticket while on duty in a police vehicle. Please let me know if you have information to the contrary. I know it doesn't sound fair but it is what it is.

The concept of us and them exists in most jobs...employees/customers,nur ses/patients. I could go on but I am sure you get my point. Right or wrong it is what it is.

well Grumpy , you are again WRONG! A On duty Cop can get a ticket! don't give up wiping poop, cause you will never make it as a lawyer!!
An on-duty South Carolina Highway Patrol officer found himself in an unusual position Tuesday morning Ė on the receiving end of a speeding ticket.

John Beheler, 58, crashed his patrol car after hydroplaning on a rain-soaked Interstate 85, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office. The accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. He sustained minor injuries in the rollover. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes.

"We are glad that Trooper Beheler was not seriously injured in this accident, and we believe that this shows how important wearing seatbelts are to reducing injuries and saving lives," Lt. Tony Ivey told the Spartanburg Herald Journal.

Ivey noted that Beheler was given a ticket for driving too fast for conditions, though that did not necessarily mean he was speeding per posted limits. A report from investigators is pending.

How long did it take you to find that one? You actually might have a brain. You were able to do a little research. I would rather help people in need then get paid to get criminals off anyway. I WILL stick to "wiping poop",it's more rewarding.

That doesn't bother me. I am good at my job and proud of it. There is SO much more involved in caring for people than just wiping poop. Every job has some sht involved. lol But you wouldn't know because you don't have a job and you are probably one of those people who complain that they have to wait at the welfare office.
