With all the shootings at schools, malls, and movie theaters it’s hard not to be concerned. I am a parent of three children who regularly take part in activities at the above places, so it is natural for me to be concerned with their well being while at these places. Recently, both of my daughters told me that the shootings in America have made them concerned with their personal safety. First, this broke my heart and really made me begin to think diligently about the situation.
My background includes being in law enforcement for over twenty years and coming in contact with people who tried to kill me, a Masters degree in criminal justice, and having a renewed spirit to educate people and help make this country better.
I told my children, first that there has always been good and evil in the world. However, that doesn't mean we have to exhibit a defeatist attitude and avoid these places. Secondly, we have to learn from these violent acts, so we can protect ourselves and maybe even prevent these types of vicious acts in the future.
As a family, we sat down and literally listed what we could do if we were in some of these situations. Here are some of the things we came up with.
School, Mall/Shopping Center, and Movie Theater Active
Shooting Situations

Universal Responses to increase chance of survival:

Get cover behind an area or object that can protect you from bullets.
Alert the authorities (law enforcement)
Always look for a safe way out of the situation.
If approached by the shooter, in a calm voice try to talk some sense into them, but do not criticize them, after all they are not acting rationally.
Try to de-escalate the situation.
Try to offer them some assistance. Example: To contact someone for them or get something for them to eat. Do anything to reduce their rage.
Once they are calmed down. Get their trust by telling them you will help them survive this mess and ensure them they must have something to live for such as family, friends, animals, skills, etc. KEEP THEM TALKING INSTEAD OF SHOOTING! Words don’t kill people. People with weapons do.

In a movie theater, it is especially difficult to protect yourself. So we came up with the idea that if we go to the theatre with our family or friends. It is better to sit near an exit and/or separate ourselves while watching the movie to increase our chances of getting away from danger, offering assistance if able, and being a good witness when necessary. Lastly, show respect for all people when viewing a movie. Remember most people go to the movies to relax and spend their hard earned money to do so. Texting and making/receiving telephone calls during movies is not cool and should be very limited. You never know who might be mentally unstable in a movie theatre and worse most movie theatres are very dark or have low light at best. I remember a famous quote: Our greatest fears are the ones we can not see.
This is especially true about movie theatres.
Lastly, I found it best to prepare my children for these kinds of violent situations by role playing. These are suggestions we came up with during role playing.
Things that can be done in a movie theatre to prevent violence
Theatres should post signs on their front doors to let the public know that their business is a safe place that will not tolerate inappropriate behavior and violators will be prosecuted.
Management should make regular rounds prior and during a movie to ensure all their customers are enjoying themselves.
If people are being rude or boisterous during a movie, contact management and ask for your money to be refunded. Taking actions into your own hands through the use of violence is never the best decision.
If a shooting takes place while you are in the theatre take cover by lying on the floor and walking on your hands and knees to the best exit for escape. Play dead if needed. If you possess a fire arm and have training in the use of that fire arm. Attempt to stop the shooter by shooting him or her center mass (this is near their central organs like the heart, kidneys, stomach). This area of the human body also increases your chance at hitting them while firing your weapon. Don’t be afraid to take the shot. Your survival may be the only lifeline for everyone else in the theatre. Lastly, if you do not have a weapon and the shooting stops attempt to overpower the shooter. Again this may be the only means to your survival. Survival is of the utmost importance during these horrible acts of violence. This topic should be discussed more and role playing should be a necessary step in the prevention of violence. Hope this helps!

Much appreciated! Thank god and king Bandrew you didn't resort to calling for yet more gun laws, bans or confiscations! Those aren't even bandaid solutions beyond the fact they're infringements upon our rights and liberties.

Definitely, no more gun laws are needed. Fewer in fact would be better! Personally I feel that if everybody carried a firearm there would be less shootings. This is because it increases the risk that the bad guy is going to lose in a fire fight. When I see the media speaking out about an act of gun violence and not giving their viewers any answers to the problem other than a new law being introduced I feel they are doing a big dis-service to educated them. Sound bites are great for ratings but are terrible for substance and real change.

The Brady Bill allowed for background checks, but there were still loopholes such as straw buys. Bottom line is that bad people with guns commit these horrible acts of violence, not all American's who value our Constitutional Rights. Remember the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution was to keep our federal government in check. Lastly, the U.S. Supreme Court has already listed which types of people who are not allowed to carry guns, which include anyone who has a felony conviction, a mental disease, a conviction of any type for domestic violence, and if the person is a foreign national (citizen from a foreign country-visa or not). Background checks have been supported for several decades, even prior to the Brady Bill. It was called checking a party through NCIC if they fit into one of the above catagories. The difference was that the first one only allowed police officers to conduct the search and the Brady Bill allows gun sellers to check. Like I said before if everyone owned and possessed a gun there would be a lot more second guessing before a gun fight took place and people would be more respectful to each other to avoid gun fights.

Sandy hook was a fckin scam scheme to push through more gun control agendas idiot! Besides, laws won't prevent a damn person from killing another if he's motivated to do so. If you were determined you could kill multiple people with a rubber flip flop! You are clearly a gvt suck up shill/simpleton who misses the actual point.

"Amen" brother! Except you should know that the expression Amen is a misnomer. It's actually an ancient conjunction of two of the most revered egyptian false gods Amun/Amen and also Ra= Amen-Ra. So, saying this at all is an act or sign of obedience and worship to the same. It also, was NOT a practice of the earliest recorded followers of Yeshua the messiah. So, saying amen is not a good thing for true believers of the "way", as messiah followers originally called themselves (They also never used the inapporopriate word christian in association with themselves and Yeshua.). Just trying to help spread the gospel and keep it real. Peace and blessings.

As parents we have to begin to teach our children to respect each other and value our Constitutional Rights. At a very young age, I taught each and everyone of my children to properly and safely handle firearms. Today, our oldest child enjoys shooting guns occasionally and has honorably served his country in both the Iraq and Afghan Wars. Our middle child enjoys shooting competition and she does very well for herself. While our youngest child is not scared to handle a gun, but simply decided early on that shooting was not her passion and has given it up to pursue other interests. I am proud to have children who all respect firearms and to live in a country that allows its people to own and carry a firearm.

Growing up in New York, I have seen local politicians try so hard to prevent gun ownership from happening. More than any other state in the nation! As residents of New York state and as citizens of the United States of America, we need to start protesting these politicians. After all it is our vote they each desire to be elected or reelected. If need be, sue the state and local governments that attempt to trample on our Constitutional rights. But don't ever be afraid or ashamed to fight for your rights.

well skippy...back in the early 70's, all you had to "pass" was a LOCAL police check....as long as your arrest record was clean or you knew the person doing the check you could get a GUN! that was the PROBLEM YOU MORON! Give little kids a gun & cry when they shoot each other & they take YOU to jail!

You know what would make you feel less helpless and male your kids feel safe? Go to a shooting range and educate yourself in fire arms! Learn fire arm safety learn how to shoot at targets learn how to disarm some one with some self defense classes. I bet you'd like a big "gun free zone" sign at malls and every other place you go to dont you? I'm sorry that to me just screams "fish in a barrel". Stop being a victim and empower yourself you could save yours, your children's and possibly some citizens lives knowing some self defense. Don't lap up all of the medias bullshit either that's just dumbing you down and is a fear tactic. Stop being scared and do something about it.

I'm sorry but sandy hook just seemed off.... How could one individual do that damage in that short amount of time with out the right weapon? They couldn't even report the weapon correctly, it didn't match up with the wounds and destruction. They completely leveled the elementary school for no real reason. This school had top of the line security systems yet there was no video footage of Lanza being there. Why were two people cuffed and why is there only one photo from this tragedy i.e. the children holding hands walking through the parking lot, that's the only picture they ever show! The man who claims to have let all those kids stay sheltered in his house totally gave this hoax away his story made no sense and he changed it too many times for it to be reliable.... What is going on with our country what are they trying to con us into now?!

Folks, I never said I was scared about guns or shootings. I own enough guns and ammo to arm a small army. However, it does piss me off that a politician may want to take my Constitutional Rights away from me when I haven't committed a crime. What I said since my first statement was that it sadden me that my younger children are worried that a violent crime like these could happen in our area. They may be worried and our solution to get over or lessen the fear was to talk about possible ways to empower ourselves, if we are involved in a violent act such as a shooting in public places. Hopefully, writing a smaller paragraph clarifies what I said. I liked the idea of teaching our children how to defend themselves through practicing or training in martial arts. But I still prefer to carry my Glock 9mm concealed. Very good shot!

Not to disarm us and take away our right to bear arms, the answer is more guns!!!Notice the states that have OPEN CARRY LAWS hardly have any gun violence ???If the teachers at Sandy Hook were armed, the shooter wouldn't have killed 26 innocent kids, now would he have????Thank God for the NRA,or we would all be sitting ducks!!!!
