Two men and a woman have been arrested in the beating and strangulation death of a Bronx construction worker, the police said Monday. The woman told investigators that she was a prostitute and had been hired by the victim, Gene Lewis, 40, but felt threatened by him and called the men to hurt him.

Mr. Lewis’s death on Feb. 27 was heard — but not seen — by his elderly landlady, who rented him the second floor of her home on Wellman Avenue, in Middletown in the East Bronx. Her description of the clamor from above was the subject of Saturday’s Crime Scene column.

“Oh, that poor guy,” the landlady, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for safety reasons, said on Monday when she learned of the circumstances of his death.“I thought it was terrible.”

The police arrested Carrie Schmidtka, 24, of Rome, N.Y., on Friday. She was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

The next day, detectives arrested Derrick Gordon, 31, of the Bronx, charging him with second-degree murder, manslaughter and possession of a weapon. A second man was arrested in Maryland and is awaiting extradition, the police said. His name was not immediately available.

“I had an ad” online, Ms. Schmidtka wrote in a statement to the police, according to a criminal complaint.“Geno called me,” she wrote, using a different spelling.“He was going to pay me $150 an hour for sex.”

Mr. Gordon, her boyfriend, drove her to the house, she said. Mr. Lewis paid her for three hours, but he “started to do drugs,” and while they never had sex,“he grabbed me,” she said, according to the complaint.

Via text message, she asked Mr. Gordon to get his uncle, whose name was not released, and a gun, she said.

Ms. Schmidtka said she went in the bathroom, and when she came out, the two men were beating Mr. Lewis, who was bound by plastic ties, with a bat at the bottom of the stairs.

“I went back in the room and took Geno’s money and the weed,” Ms. Schmidtka wrote.

“All three of us got rid of our clothing,” she said, because the men’s were bloody.“Derrick and I got new sneakers.”

Good guy who did drugs and paid hookers for sex.

Question: wouldn't the loves ones be more concerned about the behavior that led to his death than some negative comment on an article somewhere on the internet? Or are you guys and your social circles so fucked up this is considered normal behavior?
