Why so much hate for DSO workers? 99% of them are caring, compassionate hardworking people that have a job and pay taxes. Just don't imderstand all the hate for them.

What you fail to point out is that Allegations of Abuse are many times just that, allegations, unfounded. Many allegations are made against other developmentally disabled persons, community members and yes, family. It is not necessarily staff perpetrating these acts. Facts are not always facts folks. DSO has many caring, generous caregivers. Don't judge based on puffed up media.

GREAT RESPONSE! PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE OF PRIVATE AGENCIES ABOUT THAT MATTER.

There's bad people in the world doesn't mean the whole scope of DDSO should be shut down. It's scare tactics at best. Is it always a good thing to blindly listen to mainstream media? It's not like they ever exaggerate circumstances for a story or agenda.... Politics and conspiracy theories aside I have worked for/ been interviewed by several of these local private agencies before being hired by the state. The level of care at the private agencies does not even compare to what we give at the state. The rigorous hiring process (state exam, interview, drug testing, blood tests, hearing test, physical agility and strength test, psychological exam, etc..) and in depth class/ on the job training (approx 20 days) leaves us qualified and equipped to perform our duties. The knowledge of our individuals allows us to be more confident in what we do. Compensation/ benefits are also much better w/ the state allowing it's employees to focus on this one job. The private agencies pay far less, have little to no benefits, minimum training and usually only hire entry level employees at part time. This would require many private organization employees to have 2 or more jobs just to get by. When interests are divided between jobs and employees are underpaid, overtired/overworked how well do you think the care is for the individuals? Being employed with the state allows me and many others to focus only on our people, the decent compensation allows me to not need to work 60 hrs a week or have multiple jobs, and the confidence instilled throughout the extensive training allows me to be something most people can not, a hand for those in need and a voice for those who have none

It's not going to happen. I've been here thirty years and will walk away with my fat pension. I'll say goodbye to DSATs who will have their jobs but not the same benefits I'm enjoying. That will be the savings plan for the State of ny, now stop with the mass hysteria.

For the record, and this is a FACT, which can be verified online through the open books of the state of NY employment, employees living just in Rome account for over $70 million annually in payroll. That's a whole lot of money to suck out of that town. Maybe something too consider for the city if you people care. Also, there is something called FOIL, or Freedom of Information Law, where every employee's file is open to the public. Have a look if you think these people are so bad, probably be surprised at how not bad they are.
