By doing away with the Floyd County Police as a separate agency, and combining their officers and equipment under the Chief law enforcement officer of the county (Sheriff), money could be saved. It makes zero sense from an economic standpoint to have two agencies out there. The only reason given by the FCPD against consolidation is that "we would lose our identity". This is a weak reason viewed in the best light. While the commissioners seem to enjoy having their own personal police agency, their needs should take a back seat to what is best for the county. Consolidation is best. It needs to be done, and now.

Agreed. Egos are the reason this hasn't happened. Another viable solution would be to combine city and county law enforcement.

If the voters feel that consolidation is the best way to go, then let them speak. I agree that egos are in the way. This is not for the Sheriff to decide but only to implement once it has occured.

How does that topic of "do u want a county pd" get added to a ballot at an election for us to vote on though?

It doesn't get added. The Sheriff said that if the citizens want it, he will continue to do his job with the added responsibilities. I don't understand how that is a campaign issue though.

But someone has to axe the county PD and thats the only police power the commissioners have. I dont see someone influencing the commission to do away with their PD. Same situation at Polk. This has been brought up for years down there as well if I recall correctly.

You are correct Chief. It makes no sense to do multiple agencies but it's up to the voters to make that determination.

Check out how much money it has saved in other jurisdictions. Check out how well it has worked in other locations. Good luck.

This is the first time the Tea Party, and probably the only time, has supported bigger government. "We'd like one huge agency rather than two smaller ones. We think that large, top-heavy government orgs are much more responsive and cheaper than smaller, run-on-a-shoestring orgs."

It will cost alot of money to implement this in the first place. Don't know figures of how much it would save once implemented. It would be nice to see someone make a presentation with initial costs vs. long term costs, savings, etc.

here are some things that you can research if you have an interest. Columbus-Muscogee. Once consolidation took place, out of the starting block savings per year was over 1 M the first year.

Athens-Clark Co.- Savings 1st year.

The primary savings came from employee attrition, redistribution of existing manpower and savings on administrative functions. Those former chief and high ranking officers within the individual agencies chose to retire/vacate rather than accept a subordinate position within the consolidated agency.

Don't get confused. We're not talking about consolidation, we're talking about a constitutional officer, over whom the county commission has no authority, taking over a police department, for which the county currently controls its spending. To compare that with a full county-city consolidation is deceitful.

That which you speak of, Not that Simple, would be something like Atlens-Clarke county PD or Savannah-Chatham PD where the City of Athens and the County of Clarke combined and or consolidated or the City of Savannah and County of Chatham combined and or consolidated.
What were speaking of is that the Sheriff of Floyd County is the top ranking law enforcement official and he really answers to no one but himself. Whereas the County PD Chief answers to the County Commision and the County manager.
Were talking about eliminating the county PD and combining it into the Sheriffs dept. and consolidating these agencies so there would be 1 COUNTY law enforcement agency rather than 2.

Answers to the voters. If the voters like him, he stays. If they don't, he goes. Those places where it has been done virtually all love it, love the savings derived from it and realize the benefit of having an Agency that can turn on a dime if needed without having to ask "Mother May I" of the Commissioners or the County Mgr. I believe that the upside far exceeds the downside

Floydvoter,
By the Sheriff being re-elected, this has nothing to do with whether Floyd County Pd stays or goes. Sure, the Sheriff may be all for taking on the manpower, call volume, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, etc. that Floyd Pd does now if the other powers to be determine they no longer want a county pd. It's not Solely up to the Sheriff whether this consilidation occurs or not. The topic either has to be placed on a ballot and voted on SEPARATE from ones choice of what Sheriff they want OR the county commission or county government that controls the county pd has to make the decision to do away with Floyd Pd. The Sheriff does have a lot of power but merely saying " ok, I want to do away with the county pd and combine them under me is not one of them".

I believe that if it were challenged, it would be found unconstitutional for there to be any other law enforcement authority than the Sheriff.
