I came across a situation where an individual knowingly discarded an American flag into the trash can like it was meaningless trash. A discussion ensued and this person said that it was just a thing and it was not disrespect of the American Flag. I informed this person that they were wrong. They brushed it off and they really don't care. Please give me your opinions on this and let me know what you think of a person who throws away the flag like garbage.

Disposing of a piece of fabric does not equate to disrespect of one's country. With all the big issues in the world, this is what you focus on?

That piece of fabric is the reason why we have the freedom in which we enjoy so much today. Many Men and Women have given their lives for that piece of fabric. Yes, indeed that is what i focus on. because I seem to have to work with one of those people that does not appreciate the freedom in which we enjoy today and thinks that the American is just that, a piece of fabric.

The flag IS just a symbol. As someone who has lived overseas on several continents, I can tell you that I do understand and appreciate the liberties in this country. I also have seen it's unpleasantness and malignant narcissisim when anyone else is involved. Many men and women have given their lives all over the world - for their own values, morals and beliefs and own country. It is the people of any country that make it a good one - not a piece of manufactured linen waving in the breeze.

The proper way to dispose of the flag is burning with respect. If you do not understand or do not want to drop it off at any american legion or VFW they will

What do you think the American Flag represents? it represents our country the United States of America and it is not just a peice of fabric.Say that to one of our American Soldiers and see what they will tell you I'm sure you won't like it.It pisses me of that poeple like you feel that way about our flag you obviouisly don't have any repect for our flag or country Or for that matter our American Soilders that are fighting so you can have to right to be disrepectful of you so choose to be. And our American Flag is to never touch the ground. You will never hear one of our American Soliders saying it is just a peice of Fabric. And when our Amiercan Soliders die their casket's are draped with the American Flag to show repect for that solider. And the porper way to despose of the flag is to burn it not just throw it in the trash.

My god this is why our country has gone to shit.
(all of your replies, excluding the "I hope you die in a fire" one that made me laugh and was quite appropriate, and those made in conjunction to respecting the flag)

Props to the original poster for having fortitude, moral character, and enough pride in his country to stand up for the flag that represents it and much much more. You people are fucking morons, improper disposal of a flag is ILLEGAL, I hope you reported him to the local authorities for his crime.

There used to be a time in this country when people loved that flag, and the country which it so strongly represents. Our government is not our country, for you simple minded out there.

If it's any consolation I've seen many tattered flags being flown in that area whonos, do the cops care that it happens to be illegal and majorly disrespectful to others who actually care about our country and our flag? No, they worry more about traffic tickets and local government revenue, fucking hoosiers don't deserve the badge they disgrace.

saad and Tuck are flatly incorrect. To throw away a U.S. flag is not only disrespectful, it is against the law. See the U.S. Flag Code.

My GrandFather served in WWII under THAT flag. My Father, Vietnam, Me Desert Storm. I fly THAT flag at my house 24/7. hundreds of thousands gave their lives to defend THAT flag. If I see someone paying that kind of respect for THAT flag, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll step up and do something about it. For the rest of you, you are allowed to make these posts because of what THAT flag represents and who defended it. If you don't like it, stop posting and start walking. Thousands of illegals cross the border daily to get a piece of what THAT flag represents and you are welcome to take their place in Mexico.

God Bless America and THAT flag. Dispite what the sitting president and his czars trying to do to it.

God Bless our flag is right!!! I wonder, why if the flag is just a piece of material, there is a web site and Federal codes governing it. On http://www.usa-flag-site.org/etiquette.shtml it states:

Federal law stipulates many aspects of flag etiquette. The section of law dealing with American Flag etiquette is generally referred to as the Flag Code. Some general guidelines from the Flag Code answer many of the most common questions:

The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.
The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use.
The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.
The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it.
The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.
The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
Read a more comprehensive set of flagetiquette rules for display of the American Flag.

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Libra

Look after yourself today, dear Libra, because you don't have as much energy and self-confidence as usual. In fact, your spirits may be trailing around your ankles, making you feel wretched and listless. A pessimistic mood certainly won't help you cheer up, and you may be feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities or other people's problems. The fact is that you've got things out of proportion, but you'll feel better about them soon.
