They have an 80%'recapture rate'. What the hell is that? I've never heard of a business looking for a 'recapture rate'. That sounds like government speak to cover up failure. Orwell would be proud.

They now have 1750 members. That's just embarrassing. What the hell is Rolla running a business for? Why are we paying for a giant failure? They will never turn a profit. Especially when they are looking at the 'recapture rate' to determine success.

Every year they fail, and every year I tell them to sell. Rolla would have a million dollars plus in the bank if they had listened to one of my brilliant rants. SELL NOW. YOU ARE INCOMPETENT. Or don't and I will make fun of you next year.

I believe the correct terminology for an 80%'recapture rate' is a 20% loss. Or a negative profit of 20%, or for every $4 dollars they earn, they lose $5. Maybe they should start franchises in other cities. Rolla will be rich!

We bitched to the city that there was nothing for our kids to do in this backwards little town. We knew from the beginning it would need to be subsidized forever. Get over it. Your side lost, Twink.

Comrade Killa,
As you can see our socialist system has crept down to the city government level. Now Rolla is supporting activities that the poor should not be able to participate in because they can't afford it. As a capitalist pig you want only the wealthy to be able to swim in the winter and the young people using the Centre should be working cleaning your basement home for $2 a day. You have lost socialism, has taken over Rolla too. Did you here Mayor Jenks was born in Kenya and won't provide a birth certificate.

That's what you say now. But that's not how it was sold to the city. It was sold as being some great revenue generator for the city. I could have told them from day 1 that was a joke.

Actually, the Centre was there first, so the socialism must have crept up.

The poor are poor because they are lazy or made bad decision in life. There are very few poor people that are poor because they simply aren't smart enough. Laziness and your bad decisions are not an excuse to force the hard-workering, good decision-makers to work harder. We work so we can afford luxuries like a gym membership. If no one works, then there is no gym. If you want to steal the spoils of hard-work, the hard-working will stop working hard and there will be no gym.

I want everyone to enjoy a gym if they so desire. They do so by adding to society by working. If you are a sponge, you deserve nothing.

That's awesome! We are paying almost $150 per person so they can get buff. Maybe we can start paying $300 per person for clothing for people in Rolla. Or $6000 per year for housing. Why aren't we subsidizing necessities? I'm sure the hard-working will flock here to pay our taxes.

I was just thinking of all the jobs these new hard-working people will bring to the community! Let's really jack taxes to pay for lazy people. We will have to outsource jobs we will have so many new ones.

Who sold it to the city?
The Centre-sellers?

City council cooked up the entire deal because all they heard was that there was nothing to do here.

You need to get out more, dingletwat.

Killa's right. If they can't make any money, they are useless to the city. I think we should go a step further though. The police department and fire department lose the city a lot of money. Why are we taxpayers funding the police? If they can't make any money then get rid of them we can all protect ourselves from druggies, thieves, and murderers.

It was sold, as in a sales pitch, dummy.

That means because City Council was spineless to a bunch of whiners, the City Council decided it was better to steal the people's money, they represent, to placate the whiners?

I go back to my original premise then.

City Council Members=fail.

The police department and fire department do make us money.

The police prevent theft of property, help turn drug addicts into productive members of society, prevent murders from killing productive citizens.

The fire department protects all of our wonderful accomplishments from burning down.

If you are going to be a smartass at least be right.

The city should put a Starbucks in the Centre.

There are people whining about needing a Starbucks so this would be a guaranteed win/win situation. They could cover the deficit and the debt service with all the profits.

This is better than any of your ideas, killa the cornfusered.

I like that you are thinking, but it's still not headed the right direction. Starbucks would never go for it. I'll leave the reason as an exercise for you (no pun intended).

It still doesn't fix the gaping hole in the budget. That won't be fixed by government. The only option is to sell off the Centre. Let a private company take the losses or liquidate if no private company is dumb enough to make a go of it.

I can't name one great entertainment venue run by government. There is a reason 'The Centre' didn't happen in the private sector. We knew it would fail. If it had been such a wonderful money-making opportunity, we would have jumped on it already. But leave it to the government to fix a problem that isn't theirs to fix.

'Profit motive' is one of the most important concepts in economics. Government has none (it used to be some when people held them accountable). It's why this country is going bankrupt. Government is playing with other people's money and no concept of how to turn a profit.

The Centre makes us money too. By helping our citizens and young people learn about the benefits of health and exercise through affordable costs, they are more likely to live a healthy lifestyle, thus reducing obesity rates, cancer rate, etc. You are free to disagree, but that is a very important service they are providing to our community.

Thank you for illustrating my point the a group's benefit to society must be measured by more than dollars and cents. I knew you'd come around to my way of thinking!
