Two Rolla Middle School girls were queitly practicing sign langauge on the bus ride home Thurs. and some boys started acting up saying the girls were cursing in sign langauge. The bus driver tells the girls that they must stop using sign langauge because They are disturbing the rest of the bus. The reason the girls were signing to begin with is the one girls gradmother is deaf and is coming to visit. When the girls claimed their innocense the bus driver told them to "Sit down and shut up!"
The bus barn reviewed the tape and upheld the bus driver's decision of "If you use sing langauge on the bus you will be kicked off the bus". Can you believe this? Rolla public schools teach acceptance awareness yet their employees dont walk the talk. The boys on the bus should be reprimanded not the girls. I want to hear from other parents if they are having problems with bus behavior.

I've had a few issues as well. My child has been given a permanent seat in the front of the bus; while the other kids continue to run wild. I'm sure there was a valid reason my child was put in the front, neither of my children are perfect.

But I do think that the discipline should be consistent. I understand that driving a bus & trying to discipline the kids at the same time must be difficult. I have lots of respect for those who chose to drive a school bus. But I'd like to see some fairness with all students on the bus.

Have you considered taking your complaint to Aaron Zalis in the Administration Building? He supervises the Dir. of Transportation.

I also respect the job of bus drivers, goodness knows I would not be good at it. Thank you for the info. It seems like the children acting out or bulling dont get punished. I had to contact the bus barn over an elementary boy being bullied, when he told the bus driver the driver told him to sit up front and stop causing trouble. He is being bullied, the bully is the one causing trouble, but the bullied one has to change seats while the other one continues to bully. Not Fair. Any one else?

You could not pay me enough to be a driver with my back to a bunch of school children!

That being said, any problems my kids had during their years in Rolla Public Schools occurred on the bus rides to and from school.

I agree that was not a good way to handle it. The bully should be punished and put in the front. I read an article today about a boy in Iowa who recently underwent brain surgery because his football teammates bullied him. They were hitting him in the head with a football repeatedly. Bullying needs to be addressed immediately!

When my child was put in the front seat it was for giving some friends candy on the bus. Without question; she broke the rules. No food on the bus. But when another student comes on in the morning eating her breakfast; how is that OK? My issue isn't that my child got in trouble; it's that there is no consistency.

I honestly don't believe that the director of transportation would give the go ahead for there to be no sign language done on the bus. I'm not saying it wasn't said but that's kind of hard for me to believe.

Instead of worrying about if two kids are signing to each other maybe the bus driver should have been focusing in driving because I ride a bus everyday and I fear for my life because they pull out in front of cars, block lanes because they want to make the light etc. Also Sally or what ever her name is doesn't know her crap from apple butter.

We will be checking on that. The bus driver called my neighbor back this morning and told her that his boss was backing him up, and the bus driver says no more sign language. We are currently looking into getting permission to see the video tape from the bus and from there we will not "Shut up and sit down" anymore!!!!!!!!!! My daughter was one of the girls and I am not going to take this laying down. I will be in people's faces come Monday morning.

From what I've been told before no parents are allowed to view the videos due to other kids being on them. You would have too get permission from every kids parent on that bus to view video that has them in it. Again, I'm not going on anyones side but that's what I've been told.

Something else is going on. Because in the school system sign language is used everyday to assist those kids with disabilities. Several staff members through out the district are sign language certified!! Please look at videos.

I used to drive for them. I retired. But I had parents during my years there call in wanting to view video for what their kid got written up for and they were never allowed to.

If that's true, then it's an even bigger load of shit than prohibiting sign language...Rolla has got to be the most fascist damn place I've ever had the misfortune of living in

U are not allowed to see the video tape as a parent or student. They will not allow you to because of all the other students on the tape.

It sounds like to me the boys are the ones disturbing the peace on the bus not the girls. What if they were speaking spanish or french and some ignorant boys started acting up? Just because you dont understand the langauge, which ASL is a langauge, does not mean that the people are talking about you or cursing or threatening. Parents need to teach their children RESPECT FOR OTHERS. Considering that Rolla is College town and many students from other countries this is a disgrace.

And regardless of what you heard or were told, rolla schools cannot ban ASL in any venue, anymore than it can ban students from practicing Spanish, French, or whatever. Sheer and utter nonsense.

Well now,i doubt that your girls were in troube for signing. they were probally in trouble for distracting the driver. I would think that if there were boys making fun of them, then that was causing a distraction for the driver also. now, if my child were on that bus, and your girls caused a distraction that caused the driver to take his eyes off the road, and that caused an accident, and my child was hurt, then i would sue you,the parent, for my childs injury.it would be your childrens falt that the driver had to take his eyes off the road, and that act caused the accident.i would think that your children could get enough practice at home, that they dont need to be causing a disturbance on the school bus practiceing it.ive been studied law for many years, be careful what you hope for.

A poster to the school's Facebook page said the signing the girls were practicing was just giving some older kids the finger. Shame on them.
