Is Rolla a good place for a young family to move and raise a child? Are the schools and people good? same question with the local churches, are the people good and is there lots of healthy activities for the kids?

Yes. We just have a few bitter liberals here like any community.

It's a great place to raise kids. Excellent, well-equipped schools, many caring teachers, and good performance on standardized tests. Both my children went through the Rolla Schools and were Awarded scholarships for academic achievement. There are many activities for children of all ages, library programs, sports for all levels, scouting, etc. Churches, both denominational and non-denominational are all represented. There is a close relationship with the univsersity which further offers sporting and cultural events.

Some here will tell you that Rolla is full of druggies and drunks. This is not true to the extreme however, those who want to run in those circles will find their cohorts wherever they live. It's not unique to Rolla.

Most people are friendly, good to each other and their neighbors and you can be as public or private as you want to be and you will be respected.

It is a pretty typical small midwestern town with some exceptionally talented people and a richness of resources.

Rolla is a great place to raise your kids but you will have to deal with all the small town bs especially when it comes to sports.

I'd say a lot of that depends on what kind of parent you are. In order to keep your kids out of trouble you have to be on your game. Don't let them go wherever they want, or stay out til all hours, or take their word that their with their friends, etc. I see too many lazy parents sit on their butts and assume their kids aren't doing any wrong. You need to constantly be checking up on them and keeping tabs on them. They also need to know there will be a price to pay for breaking rules. Too many parents cave and kids learn that they'll get their way if they drive the parents crazy enough.

It appears that the local police and sherriffs deputies have slowed down on murdering young people...maybe its getting to be a safer place to raise kids

Sounds like a good place, thanks for all the input, our children are 9 months and 2 years, so its safe to say they wont be out at all hours in the near future, again thanks for the great input, you sound like some well educated, great people, we were a little worried about moving to the middle of missouri, wasnt sure what to expect, thanks ladies and gentlemen. Have a blessed day.

Rolla is a good place to raise small children but you should probably move before they hit junior high/high school age. It's way too easy to get in the wrong crowd! There's nothing better to do than get into some trouble! Plus my husband says they have a horrible education system seeing as how he knows so much more than me. Lol. I learned everything I know in college.

We've raised two kids hear. It is a very safe place compared to other places. For us it is the right size. Not too small or too big. Yes some drugs in the schools. No more than anywhere else. Probably less than lots of places. Sometimes its best that kids see some of this I think. And pray they make the right choices. Luckily our kids did. If kids are totally protected such as a tight run church school or homeschool. Well I've seen lots of those kids go pretty wild with drugs etc because they wernt exposed at all to those things.

No I was raised here and it honestly ruined my life. Move to the city more opportunities and more girls. If u want to raise your kids to be miserable stay here but if u actually care about em get out.

I agree. Not a great place for kids. I'm not saying a big city is the best alternative but most other small towns seem a lot more wholesome than Rolla.

Lived here pratically my whole life, and it is pretty standard. Great sports opps, programs for young kids. Only problem i had was in high School where it seemed all the popular kids from rich families got all the breaks, and favortism, however i think that is true anywhere.. Beautiful parks, nice scenery, good elementary schools, okay middle school. Only bad thing is not a lot of high paying jobs unless you work with MST, MO SCI or Brewer Science.
