Michelle Obama says many too fat to fight in military

Share this story:
America, the first lady says, has a pudgy problem.

A significant percentage of its youths are too fat to fit in military uniforms.

First lady Michelle Obama talked about the issue during her visit Wednesday to the Atlanta area to promote healthy eating. In a speech at Alpharetta’s North Point Community Church to highlight her "Let’s Move" healthy living campaign, Obama relayed a gaudy statistic.

"Believe it or not, right now, nearly 27 percent of 17- to 24-year-olds are too overweight to serve in our military," she said.

Are the right wing responsible for this?

Tree huggers are usally in shap.

I've lived in many states, but most closely identify with the liberal states. I've certainly noticed the differences between the blue and the red states.

People have more education, along with better jobs and incomes in liberal states. They choose better foods to eat, and they make better lifestyle choices--more exercise, biking, hiking, skiing, jogging, walking--and less sedentary activities like watching tv, smoking, and swilling beer all day. They have access to more comprehensive reproductive healthcare services and information. In general, in liberal states women are more educated and the more educated mothers are, the better the outcome for a healthy pregnancy and childhood--where better health starts.

Yesterday I drove an elderly couple to the Rolla Walmart to do their shopping--a spry and healthy pair of liberal octagenarians carrying a shopping basket between them. We were slowed down following huge and relatively young people perched on those electric carts all over the store. Their baskets were overflowing with coke and junk food. I didn't see a single carrot stick or an apple in those baskets. I've never seen so many obese people snatching up so much trans fat and high fructose corn syrup all in one place in my life! The "conservative" states pay more for Medicaid per adult for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke than liberal states do.

I also noticed that the states in the healthy category have better preventative health insurance programs in place. Progressive means using knowledge to make life better, but in the red states they would rather be spoonfed their pap and gruel than to think before they eat. They'd rather pay more to support the consequences of bad social choices than to change bad food manufacturing policies.

Heck, the red states want to ensure that you can't sue manufacturers for any harm done to you in order to allow corporations to enjoy a stable marketplace with no "surprise" expenses like nasty old lawsuits for negligence and deliberate malfeasance. That is supposed to ensure prosperity for corporations who will be safe from inconvient employment discrimination lawsuits, too. They can hire and fire just because they like or don't like your political party. Goodness, it sounds like they want us to go back to the days of Tiny Tim and Scrooge, back to the days of coal smoke belching smokestacks and child labor in sweatshops.

Sorry, I tend to see "red" sometimes. I'm allowed because I was a Republican for 27 years, then had my eyes opened and realized I'm a fiscally conservative tree-hugging liberal.

Do you think those red states are influenced by the fact that they are mostly right-to-work states? The people in those states have the right to work for less. Less pay means less education, less pay for their job performance, less chance to advance in achieving the American dream. It does not make them less intelligent. Big business has those poor people right where they want them, beat down and living from pay check to pay check. Are products and services cheaper in those states? They should be because wages are cheaper, but in many cases, those things are more expensive.
So eat what you want because big brother in going to be in charge soon.
In my opinion, the so-called first lady is not a poster child for a healthy life style.

While I was in college I lived on minimum wage and chose to eat a healthy vegan diet. I had the energy to take an above full-time class load while working 40 hours a week, while living in a "right to work" state--Florida. While my redneck friends chose to spend all their money on junk food, cigarettes and cheap beer, I chose an education and cultured friends from all over the world. My employer hardly beat me down, they promoted me within six months to an outside sales position.

I've met many people without a formal education who continue to educate themselves and make wise choices who are never beaten down by anything. If you gave me one minimum wage family's budget I can show you how to make them debt free and no longer dependent upon the "next paycheck" inside of six months of proper choices. You are confusing stupidity for lack of education.

As for the First Lady, she is a great example of good health, cultured living, and achieving an excellent education--for all Americans. You could have done what she has done and are merely envious that she actually did what you were incapable of accomplishing yourself.

When we had slaves there were no fat black people does that mean we should go back to slavery. I don't think so. What we need is a government that cares and people who will revolt against the man.

I watched a documentary on public television over the weekend that showed old photographs depicting quite a few "fat" slaves. They lived on a subsistence diet of starches and their genes predisposed them to hoard calories for lean times. What you may be exceedingly worried about is that only the fittest survived. That is what your diluted and weakened genes have to compete with today. It's natural selection at work. Remember, G-d created evolution and saw that it was good! That's why kittehs have teeth and claws while humenz have a few thousand words and little else.

Your misogynist comment doesn't provide anything to this discussion. Let's talk about your beer gut and missing teeth instead.

You've got that right! There is a thread here on Topix about the level of health or lack of it experienced by "right to work" states like Misery, versus the higher health standards enjoyed in liberal states. Hands down, health and income is better for citizens of blue states.

I've been vegetarian for 21 years and I love it. I get animal protein from eggs and dairy, plus vegetable protein from nuts, soy, and whole-grains. I really like soy, spinach, and anything spicy.

We just had some Palak Paneer over Yukon Gold baked potatoes. They sell packaged Palak Paneer at Kroger. Talk about spicy! I mix in some coconut milk to bring it down a notch. You can get that by the half gallon at Foods for Health. Once you open it, it keeps for a couple of weeks.

I don't think I've ever ate Paneer, but I googled Palak and it sounds amazing, and easy to make.

It's awesome that Rolla has a fitness thread. Yay to clean living! I like that about Michelle Obama.

The most out of shape segment of american society are African American women......higher obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure......and most likely to vote for a Dimocrat.....also, large numbers in the states you mentioned.

So go pound sand, Dude, you retard. ;)

You missed a few things in your erstwhile analysis of the issues. The African Americans who survived the hardships of slavery carry the genes that promoted survival, especially genes that grab and hold calories for lean times. They also eat the standard American diet which directly causes obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, for whites, blacks, and Native Americans. They don't suffer these diseases in Africa where they are able to eat natural foods.

Give me just one good reason why any citizen who works for a living for wages should vote for a Republican instead of a Democrate. And explain what happened to your education to prevent you from being able to write and spell in American English, complete with punctuation and paragraphs? At least Michelle Obama finished college and qualified as an attorney. She is giving back to America, and being a great First Lady.

Let me get this straight, black folks have a 'pass' on being fatasses.......because being fat is 'genetic'.....except when it isn't? You know you're a tool, right?

It's quite ironic to fixate on punctuation and spelling, when you think it's spelled 'Democrate'....oh, wait, typo, right? Again, you're a tool.

Also, relying on a 'living wage' would tend to illustrate poor personal life choices and lack of self-control, much the same as 'being a fatass'. ;)
