I figured I'd bump this thread. I went for a drive on old 93 yesterday and to see how much further things have declined breaks my heart.

What's funny is that there is direct colleration between when Pressmen's folded and when things began to decline in the area. Yet, no one considers it and no one in the county leadership seems to give a damn .Our state and national leadership is useless.

Instead of investing millions into a turd of a hotel on Main St, the money should have been invested in Pressmen's.

Hell, it still has potential. It sickens me how it's just left behind to die a slow death. Imagine if it were returned to it's former glory, and became a vacation resort. Hell, the way that valley lays, it could be a combination of so many things, golf course, amusement park, resort style hotels.

Then again, maybe that's just how folks around here are. I can't begin to count all the abandoned farmhouses, or homes that are left to fall. People just don't care. And then they vote in bigger a@@es that , again, just don't care...

Instead, we're hardly a smidge better than Sneedville.

Stop voting for people to do nothing and start voting for people that are going to do their jobs and bring much needed money and investment into the area.

Sorry, but man am I p&ssed. What potential we have is just languishing, and nobody even cares.

The place goes up and down continuously. Every 6 months someone new starts to revitalize the golf course, then goes out of business. I almost want to believe there is some hidden factor involved, too many people have failed to get started. The last price I heard for the place (the golf course +) was a steal. Anyone with any common sense could put in a retirement community and 9 holes and sell out in less than a year easily, even in this economy. The trick is getting outsiders interested. People in this are are not going to want to retire to this area, and even if they did, they don't have any money. People from Richmond, Washington DC, are begging for golf course retirement communities. They sell out as fast as they can build them.

And then there is always the possibility of the right person staying at the Hale Springs Inn who would discover Pressmans Home. Have the money and ability to turn it into something. Retirement community? Retired people don't spend as much. Doesn't sound as profitable to me. People coming and going... High end resort... put in an air strip... cater to horse people too, rebuild the stables... golf course... spa... swimming pool... restaurants, simple to elegant... fun to dream.

The same quality that made it the ideal place for Pressmans' Home now works against it ever being developed - namely, it's remoteness.
There's no easy way to get there, what with seriously curvy roads and all.

Anyone remember the nice restaurant someone had out there some years ago?
They couldn't get enough business out there since folks didn't want to travel the roads, especially after dark.

When I was a kid my parents would take us over in Scott County Virginia to visit relatives. It was about an hour and a half drive out to the middle of nowhere. It still is in the middle of nowhere, but now there are all these expensive houses popping up everywhere, and SUVs are zipping up and down the roads all the time. It stays so busy up there even though there is nothing there, no jobs, no stores, nothing.

I think as time passes and people get older, they begin to realize how much other people suck. So, they want to move away from the city to some remote farm so that they will be away from others. All my old neighbors scraped by all their lives, they worked hard to get their farms paid off. One-by-one they died off, and within a few months some rich carpetbaggers from Florida, probably never set out a tomato plant in their entire life, moved in and became farmers. Maybe this will happen to the Pressman's home region eventually. Though, it won't be you or your community, it will be someone else's private fun park.

It is already, since it's all privately owned and all chopped up now.

I wish more "rich Florida carpetbaggers" would move into the area. And anybody else who want to retire in the Pressmens home area. The way I see it they are bringing in fresh money and with that some fresh ideas. If the people who were trying to revamp the area were to get more support from the county gov and the locals then something may happen there. I support anybody who improves this area.

Why,so that it can be burned down later????

That whole area is way too far gone to refurbish. What needs to be done is to just bulldoze the entire area.
While Pressmens home was in operation it was a nice area and kept up but unfortunately progress caused the Union to leave that very remote location. You can continue to live in and lament the past but it does not do anyone any good.
