Well, didn't Jesus supposedly say in Matthew 10,

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law."

"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household." 10:34-36 KJB

If they do turn people against their families, hey the church is just trying to be like Jesus. Prince of Peace. Uh huh!

If those members of the family are harmful to her physically or emotionally, she should do her best to stay away from them. That's not being "judgemental", that's just being smart.

I am by no means a fan of church in general but your accusations are a little off base unless the individuals you mentioned are faculty of the church and not just members. It isn't fair to say the "church" is doing this if it is just a few member of the church who are putting these things into your friends head.

If the church is telling your friend to distance herself from friends and family who do not share the same beliefs, that would be nothing new as many belief systems stress the importance of distancing yourself from non believers and surrounding yourself with like minded individuals.

They claim many reasons for this but of course it is generally just a means of control if you are not exposed to opposing views you are less likely to questions yours aka the churches.

In my opinion, brainwashing is always the intent. The goal is to indoctrinate you into their belief system, to get you to have the same biased point of view as the church.

Same thing with a cult that is why I asked, What's the difference?

If the church is trying to turn people against their friends and families because the family will not join the church, then yes, that is one of the key elements of a cult.

However, it depends on the circumstances. If the friends sand family are drug addicts or such, that's a different matter.
