To be a Christian, you Admit that you are separated from God by your imperfection (sin) and you recognize that the only way you can have a relationship with God is to allow Jesus Christ to be the "Lord" of your life.

In other words, you realize that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh (completely human and completely God at the same time) and lived on the earth for 33 years, and throughout those 33 years he never sinned (something we are incapable of apart from Him). As the scriptures prophesied, He was crucified, buried, and rose from the dead. defeating sin and paying the debt we owed for our sins ("For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23). His crucifixion was the only sacrifice that could bridge the gap between sinful man and God.

After realizing that His sacrifice is the only way to God, you choose to allow Jesus to be in control of your life and follow Him. If you choose to follow Jesus Christ, you will join Him in heaven when you die. That part is instantly taken care of, but the spiritual Growth that comes from the decision to follow Him is a lifelong process. Now you have the ability to grow spiritually. Before, you had no hope of change.

There are many people who are considered "Honest People" and they have no relationship with God. At the end of the day, they are no better off that someone who is as crooked as the come. Because they are still separated from God by their sin, they are missing the most important thing in life. There is no way to "earn your salvation".

Sadly, many times, people consider being a Christian just another status, like "Single" or "Braves Fan". People may think, "Well, grandma was a Christian, so I'm a Christian!" or they may say, "I go to church, so I'm a Christian". Both of those statements are fallacies. Jesus Christ clearly said "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." in John 14:6. Without that relationship, you are not truly a Christian.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9

I hope that clears up some of the confusion and answers your question. It is a very valid question because we live in a society that generates so much confusion on that topic and there are so many people who seem like great upstanding honest citizens that would be in hell if they died, because Jesus Christ offered them the opportunity to have a relationship with Him and they chose not to. There are many examples on this site of people who claim to be Christians, but have no relationship with God at all, I would advise you to be aware of that when you receive advice from posters on this site. I pray for them regularly, because many of te things they say in the name of "Christianity" do not reflect the true character of Jesus Christ. On the other hand, there are many others on this site who do have that relationship, and you will recognize them by their fruit. The Bible describes the Fruit of the Spirit as follows:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23

well...nothing. If being a "good" christian means you dont lie or you treat people fairly..etc.. then that makes being a christian based on works. Christian means to be Christ-like. It doesnt mean you are without sin or that you are perfect. It doesn't mean that you wont brake any of the 10 commandments. See, im not always a christian, im not always Christ-like. Most of the time i'm more man-like. BUT, i am always saved, always a child of God, and always redeemed by the blood of Jesus. By His blood, His works and not mine. If I am without that then it doesnt matter how honest i am, how good i am, i am still lost. And if i do have my sins covered by the blood, then it doesnt matter how honest i am or how dishonest i am, I will still belong to God. So the question really isnt between a good christian or honest person, its a question of being saved or not, cuz if you're not then you are lost forever in Hell separated from God and His glorious Son Jesus.

Honest people can be of any faith.

If this isn't the answer you was looking for, then you need to reword your question.

Well said wondering. So thankful he died for our sins so we could be saved and not spend eternity in hell. I would rather spend it in heaven. How about you what is your choice?

Heaven is a state of mind. Hell is being evil towards others. The Bible is a lovely story about morals, written 300 years A.D. in Greek, then translated how many times before English....now sit by a campfire, hold hands with 10 people, tell 4 sentences in a whisper to one person etc. and see who comes up remembering the original? Oh, and speak English.
The Baptist faith originated in the 1600's.
Educate yourself. Roman Catholicism is the oldest Christianity by the Apostle Peter. PLEASE educate yourself as well on the true reason that the current Pope is resigning. Something only one pope has done before. It's not his health! Popes carry the title till they die. Cardinals assist when his health declines. The current Pope disputed many, many parts of The Saint James Bible recently, and The Catholic Church has ALWAYS had in The Vatican major portions of The Bible never released. I'm not Catholic, but I am curious about other religions. I feel if you believe in a higher power and are humble and kind to anyone you meet, then that is a good thing.

The copy of the book of Isaiah found in the dead sea scrolls amazed researchers because the modern English translation was as accurate a translation as they could have done themselves using this ancient Hebrew text. Prior to the discovery of the dead sea scrolls many intellectuals believed that Isaiah was written after the death of Jesus because of the accurate prophesy of the life of Jesus. But this may all be "just in my mind".
