Hawkins County will have a new, state of the art jail which will open in the spring. This new jail will solve many of the problems the current jail has. The county commission has not funded the 14 to 16 new correctional officers which will be required to staff this new facility. Some say the commission may wait until they are court ordered before they will raise taxes to hire new correctional officers, to lay blame on the federal Court or State.

Please tell commissioners that we need to hire and train these new employees now!!! Dont wait until too late!! We should have hired new correctional officers at the beginning of the last budget to prepare for the new jail. The jail cannot move into the new facility without the new officers. It has to be done, so why put this off to the last second, which will lead to later opening and movement of the old jail to the new. We need these people now. If we had more people, maybe this jail break would not have happened!!

The Sheriff's Office is very understaffed. There are not enough patrol officers, detectives, narco officers, jailers and court/transport officers. It has not grown with the times.
Dont let the county commission wait to be told to hire new jail staff. The commission should man-up and do the right thing. Dont wait till too late!! Please speak to your commissioner today!!

Of course, the new jail won't actually open until the sheriff's budget has money for the staff. We could find our county will have a nice new building that will remain empty for some time until the commission comes up with $350,000+ for those new staff positions.

As for waiting for a court order, that sounds like something those 21 commissioners would pull.

If you know someone in need of a job, send them to the Sheriff's Office. There always is a need for applicants. It can be a good place to work and there are good people that work there. The pay isnt really great, insurance is high, but still not a bad place to work.

Why can't the staff of the present jail run the new jail?

Simple answer, the new jail is bigger and it will take more officers.

The current jail is a small building with space for 60 or so inmates. The new jail is built for 230+ and is divided into multiple cell blocks, one for women and two for male inmates.

There is also an area to book inmates into the new jail and that will need to be staffed by someone other than the guards.

When are they going to start the bridge across 11W so the inmates can walk to the Warrior to get their beer or are they going to have a cross walk? What a waste of money.

Hawkins and a new Jail....LOL nobody was scared of the old jail. It will remain full and only brilliant criminal minds will escape to get another 6 pack.

I was being serious. I don't want an inmate to get hit by a car. The tax payers will have to pay for it. If parents would have done their job we would not need a new jail!

I agree with you 100%,but the fact is parents have not done their job,and now we have a generation of criminals to deal with.I think we will have to have a tax increase to staff the jail,BUT the new jail will make the county money by keeping state prisoners because the state penitentiaries are overcrowded and they "farm out" prisoners to local jails. This all depends on the jails being staffed and meeting other standards set by the state.I think Hancock County was housing prisoners from Washington DC once!!!This jail can be a source of income instead of a drain of tax money, but we are gonna have to bite the bullet and raise taxes,we shouldn't have to put up with the Commissioners pissing contest so they can say "I didn't want to raise taxes, but the state made me,and my old enemy WANTED to raise them".Are we as a county so ignorant that we keep re-electing some of these spineless incompetents?

I think the it's the governments fault. I got my share of azzbeatins while I was growing up and I've never seen the inside of a jail. You can't bust their hiney's anymore or you'll be the one inside the cell.

For those who think that a new building will cure what ails the Hawkins County Sheriffs' Department....well, buildings don't fix people.
In that particular case, VOTERS will be doing the curing next year.

I have a great idea for all of those that think they can do better than the current staff go down and pick up an appilcation. I agree there has been somethings happen that are an embarassment, but there are some truly dedicated people who work there and have worked there for years. Give those few guys credit they stayed because they WANT to work for Hawkins county, it is there home too.

I agree. There are, indeed, some fine folks on staff...but they're not running the show and making the decisions that have led to the string of issues we've witnessed.
