I have 10 Dominique "Dominecker" laying hens for sale. They are fully grown. I'm asking $10 each on those. I also have 2 Americauna laying hens. They lay green jumbo eggs. I'm asking $12 each on those two. I also have 2 White Leghorn roosters for $5 each.

Well I would buy some from you, but that sounds a little high. You can get the dominickers at the flea market for $6 each.

I can't go any lower than that. I have more than $6 each in them.

Well it's just too gosh darn bad that you have more than $6 in them. With vet bills and feed I've got $500 in each of my goats, but that doesn't make them worth $500! I'd be lucky to get $70.

$10. each for adult Dominecker hens is a fair price, provided they are less than 2 years old. Domineckers are very productive, are prone to few health problems and given the opportunity to set on a clutch of eggs and hatch them, do a good job of raising their diddles.
Don't begrudge a man a decent price for good breeding stock. Yes you can get stewing hens at the flea market cheaper... But you have to ask yourself, whether you want stewing hens or good breeding stock ? And at the price of eggs these days, a laying hen will start paying back your investment right off the get go..

Thanks Ow3n. They are sold. Sold them a few minutes ago. Domineckers are great hens. I have too many of them and just needed to lower my feed bill. Yea, you're right. You can buy hens for that cheap at flea markets but they are all culls. You can't find pure bred hens, ACTUALLY laying at the flea market for no less than $8. I've still got a good 15 domineckers left and man are they layers. I got 13 eggs today. I'm averaging a little over a dozen a day. A few months back, I had a long hard thought session with myself. I wondered to whether invest my money in a bank or invest in something that will produce me something to eat. I decided on the hens. With the next depression shadowing over us, I don't trust banks.

Glad you found a good home for them. People looking for bargain basement livestock generally end up wishing they had bought better stock...

Would be chicken buyers need to take a hard look at the feet, the beak and the vent. These will generally be the best indicators of a hen's age..

I've been thinking about getting a couple of laying hens myself, but I wasn't sure what the ordinance is within the city limits. They'd certainly be treated like pets (that make me breakfast) and not livestock. I just want a couple or three. And I'm with you - it's time we start investing our money on things that will actually give us a return, instead of just handing it over to some white collar jerk-off to play with. But I digress.... Am I gonna get in trouble for keeping a couple of hens in my yard? I have a neighbor that bitches about everything, so I'm sure she'd have a fit, but if it's legal then she'll just have to deal with it.
