For quite some time the Republicans have been searching for a "business-friendly alternative" to overtime pay. And now with a renewed effort on the part of Eric Cantor, it looks like we have finally arrived: OVERTIME PAY WILL SOON BE ANCIENT HISTORY!!!

Let's face it: the time-and-a-half rule is an out-dated, antiquated practice put in place a hundred years ago by bleeding heart liberals like FDR and Obama. The overtime rule forces employers to pay their employees extra money; as such, most employers refuse to give their employees more than 40 hours worth of work per week.

It is unfair, burdensome government regulatory policies like this that hurt small businesses and put our economy into the gutter.

Well good news for American workers. Finally the Republicans are making progress in eliminating overtime pay altogether. The GOP-led House just recently passed a bill which allows you the flexibility of working as much as you choose.

Finally the ball is in your court, finally you have freedom to decide.

Work as much as you want. Work 20 hours... 40 hours... 90 hours or more. You get paid the exact same amount of money per hour. How fair can you get? And since your employer is not being forced to pay you a ridiculous sum in overtime pay, your employer can afford to give you many more hours to work.

Work as much as YOU want, YOU decide. Wow! In fact, it is predicted under this plan that if you simply work just a couple hours extra per week, you will make ten-fold times more money than you ever would have made with traditional overtime pay. Look's like a Win-Win for both employer and employee!!!

Under this new legislation, instead of receiving the traditional time-and-a-half pay for overtime, you will instead receive Comp Time Off. This plan works just like a vacation day. You put in a request to schedule yourself an off day 3 months from now, and your employer approves your request. It is that simple.

Goodbye overtime pay. This is the type of leadership we need in government. We need leaders who know how business works and who can get our economy back on track. I think they should have eliminated overtime and minimum wage years ago, glad to see that some parts of government are serving the interests of American citizens in spite of Obama's meddling.

Just What The Already Overworked, Underpaid Working Class,Needs. Now Businesses Will Work Us Into An Even Earlier GraveWith 60 Hour Work Weeks, Since It Will Be Cheaper Than Overtime Or, God Forbid, Actually Hiring Enough Employees So They Can Have A Life Outside Work. Sorry About The Crazy Caps, Not Intentional, But I Just Got Off Work And Am Too Tired To Go Back And Correct It.

I don't have anything against workers, or against anyone who is trying to take care of their family by working hard and putting in extra hours

BUT

the problem with the idea of Overtime Pay is that it is just one of the many bleeding heart liberal socialistic practices that have emboldened the Entitlement Mentality and made people dependent on government. Just like any other entitlement program.

In our society, people believe that they are owed. Your boss owes you because you were gracious enough to come to work.

And so it is the employer's sole responsibility to cover all the costs for your health care. For dental and vision. The employer is supposed to give you time off for illness or a death in the family. Paid vacation. Take care of you if you get hurt on the job. Give you 9 months paid maternity/paternity leave. Give you a sweet retirement package when you turn 55. Etc., etc., etc..

Look, the employer is not a baby sitter. You should not be getting any of these things, the only thing your employer owes you is a paycheck. And if you don't like the hours or working conditions, then you can quit at any time. Period.

Which is why I tremendously like the idea of getting rid of Overtime Pay altogether. You should be paid the same rate for the same amount of work. You should not be getting paid extra overtime pay just because the timeclock says you were at work for longer than normal. And it is ridiculous to believe that you should be owed time-and-a-half pay anyway.

For one, the man who owns a small business doesn't get time-and-a-half pay for working long hours, does he? Is a business owner allowed to charge their customer extra so he can pay himself for working overtime? Or how about the millions of people who are self-employed, they file taxes as independent contractor and never collect any overtime.

In China and India, people are not lazy or dependent on government to solve their problems, they go to work for an honest wage. Do you think the Chinese collect free health insurance, paid vacation, free obamaphone and overtime pay? No. Because in China, people go to work to make an honest wage and an honest living.

That's the attitude we need in America. We need reform. We need tort reform so that employees are not allowed to slam their employers with frivolous, million-dollar worker's comp lawsuits. We need reform to get rid of all these burdensome government regulations and labor laws, like worker's comp, minimum wage, OSHA, unions, employee-provided healthcare, any laws having anything to do with gender or race discrimination, and overtime pay.

I am glad that the GOP-led house has finally taken a stand for employers and employees when they passed this legislation.

Let me back Chowder up on this one, I agree with the idea, now let me explain, say you make $15 an hour and are limited to work 40 hours because the employer cannot afford to pay you $22.50 for anything over 40 but you cannot live on 40 hours pay ($600) so if he is not condemned to pay the 22.50 and say he does allow you to work an extra 16 hours (another $240) then you don't have to moonlight at a $9.00 an hour job to support your family. Two thoughts, if you moonlight for $9.00 then wouldn't you rather make $15.00 at your regular job. Thought number 2, most of overtime pay is eaten up by taxes, there would not be much of a dollar difference seen in your paycheck. I would also bet that most employers without their hands tied would offer a couple extra dollars an hour instead of being forced into the "time and a half"!

Very few places pay $15 or $13 or even $10 per hour. It's hard to make ends meet as it is. The rich will get richer & the rest of us will struggle to survive.

You people who are for this insanity have obviously not worked very much! If you had,you would know that $15 is a competitive wage and $10 definitely is!(IF you want to put the effort into some sort of schooling) at least tech school! But no,you will not find such a job with no h.s. diploma.Get your G.E.D. and put the time and effort the rest of us have into college or tech and you will be preaching another message! You will then see what it's like to be educated i.e. skilled and use your intelligence to make these companies millions doing a job that not just anyone can do and THEN say you agree with no overtime pay! I am salary non-exempt and I think there are too many of us skilled, educated people to pass such an unfair socialist act.I am NOT putting anyone down,I am encouraging you to expand your education which will expand your opportunities which will make more of us to defend our hard-earned overtime pay! I think they WANT to turn the American people against one another! You master chowder do seem to have a socialist mind-set.I saw this without reading your entire post! Obama loves people who are willing to just throw away their rights without even a fight! Guess you are against the second amendment too!

So basically you knew right away that I am a socialist without even reading my post.

You are absolutely right, everyone knows that I am a *huge* Barack Obama fan. I support gay marriage, gun control, and muslims. You found me out!

LOL!!!

This is why America is in trouble. Because of low-information, uneducated, easily-manipulated cattle like yourself. You might think you are being an objective, informed, common sense person, but the reality is that most voters are just like you; they make snap judgments based on impulse and emotion instead of reading the facts for yourself before you open your big mouth. Hence Obama is elected to A SECOND TERM.

You have no clue what the words "socialism" or "Republican" mean, do you????

For two years the GOP regularly held presidential primary debates where candidates talked *extensively* about doing away with burdensome governmental regulations and reducing the power of the federal government.

Uhhhh.... what exactly do you think they were referring to, anyway???

Overtime pay is just one of the many federal laws, others that need to be eliminated include unfair business taxes, minimum wage, anti-discrimination laws, affirmative action, workers comp/disability, FMLA, unemployment, etc... And employer-sponsored healthcare and retirement need to be replaced with employees covering 100% of the cost for their own healthcare and retirement. It is time for these freebies to end.

The very things that are killing small business in our country and driving jobs to China are exactly the things that I have talked about time and time again. And this is exactly what Republicans have been talking about for the past 2 years: eliminate governmental regulation and reduce the power of the federal government.

As poster Thinking has written above, he explained precisely how you would BENEFIT from doing away with Overtime Pay. American workers will BENEFIT from this.

Buddy, you don't even know what is going on in reality.

Here's a clue: All over the south, people HATE the federal government. Ask any of your friends here in Tennessee, people in this state HATE federal government.

And it aint the granite buildings or the marble statues in the capitol that people hate. And people do not hate the president as a person or because he is black, in fact most people believe Obama to be a total gentleman in his personal life.

What people hate about Federal government are the laws, period. Like the laws I mentioned above. Laws and federal government are one-in-the-same. The tyranny of government is the laws which they impose to constrain our freedom.

There was once a time and a place for labor unions, but today most will agree that the union is an antiquated practice. Well, as with the unions, it is time for these antiquated labor laws to be eliminated. Time-and-a-half might have been a good idea 100 years ago for employees working at the Triangle Waist Shirt factory, but it does not make sense in today's economy. And Overtime Pay certainly is not fair if you are one of the millions of self-employed workers in this country.

This is how bad the entitlement mentality has become in America. The attitude of "I deserve" has become so strong that if you don't get your freebies, you turn to threats of violence.
