Hawkins County prosecutor resigns amid sex allegations
Assistant Attorney General Doug Godbee resigned Monday evening at the request of Attorney General Berkeley Bell.
By JEFF BOBO
jbobo@timesnews.net
ROGERSVILLE — Hawkins County Assistant Attorney General Doug Godbee resigned Monday evening amid allegations that he made inappropriate communications to a female defendant.
Third Judicial District Attorney General Berkeley Bell told the Times-News Tuesday that Godbee’s resignation came at Bell’s request.
Godbee, 57, is accused of requesting sexual favors from the female defendant, who is facing a felony drug charge in Hawkins County Criminal Court.
Bell said the allegations will be thoroughly investigated, but not by his office.
He has turned the case over to Attorney General Russell Johnson of Kingston.
Bell said he anticipates
that evidence against Godbee could eventually be submitted as a presentment to a grand jury, although that will be Johnson’s decision.
The female defendant brought the allegations to Bell’s attention.
Bell added that there is corroborating evidence of communications that Godbee sent to the woman via text and voicemail.
Godbee is highly respected in the Hawkins County law enforcement community for his skill as a p r o s e c u t o r.
Several high-ranking Hawkins County police officers said they were saddened by this latest turn of events.
Bell said Godbee has been a valuable member of his staff for a long time.
“In light of past history I had no choice (but to seek Godbee’s resignation),” Bell said.
Godbee, who lives in Rogersville, has been an attorney since 1978 and served as an assistant attorney general in Hawkins County for three decades.
He had previously resigned in November 2006 after a female victim of a crime that he prosecuted came forward with allegations that she and Godbee had a brief affair.
Johnson investigated the 2006 allegations as well, but there were no charges filed against Godbee, and he was reinstated as Hawkins County’s senior assistant attorney general in January 2008.

I think black sheep meant that the investigation would be swept under the rug. Much like other "investigations".

Rogersville Assistant Attorney General Doug Godbee's resignation takes effect at the end of the month.
What the heck? We've been all through this before and he was rehired afterwards? Was he rehired at a higher salary or something?

I think he must have a real problem, like one of our elected officials, that actually needs treatment. Now parents of his scouts will have to explain AGAIN what has happened.

ok ok you got me. I admit I have also repeatedly used my position of power to gain sexual favors from the weak and vulnerable. I will do it to a crime victim or a crime perp. makes no difference to me. I cant throw one stop at this man because I do it too. We all do. We never know when one of us might be in his shoes and accidentally proposition someone for sex while using our office. It could happen to anyone. everyone uses their position as a tool to hit up vulnerable women for sexual favors dont they?

unfortunatly for that gal that burned her baby with cigerettes and bite her or allowed boyfriend to do it she now wont be able to blow her way outa this one. But for the rest of the community we are pleased that justice can now be dealt out sans handjobs.

Sounds like some High ranking police officers are either dumber than hell are they as well as bell and johnson need to be highly Investaged.Cases that have been before goobee in the last 20or30years should be brought back to court to make sure Justice was seved..It is time to clean up and get rid of the Rates Nest in Hawkins County, stand up and be counted.

Because of double jeopardy, you can't retry cases where the person was let go because the prosecutor was corrupt and traded sexual favors.

You can retry cases where the person was wrongly imprisoned though because officials were corrupt. Even that is pretty tricky.

DOes this mean that this will probly cause an influx of a large number of current prisoners seeking to have sentences reduced due to this? I can just imagine alot will try too even if their case didnt invole coruption. This is a mess all the way around.

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Virgo

It's a rather low-key day with a few disappointments to cope with along the way. If you were looking forward to a social event, such as meeting up with friends, it may fail to live up to your expectations. It might even be delayed or postponed through no fault of your own. There could also be problems about how much something is going to cost, forcing you to scale down your plans to make them more affordable.
