Is it plagiarism to copy from an article on the internet and paste it here on Topix? Is it necessary to cite the original source?

I think that a legal definition of Plagerism would be for you to act as if the writings were your own. I seriously doubt that anyone would go to the trouble of trying to go after someone who has cut&pasted an article to the Rogersville TOPIX forum.

Technically sure it's plagiarism not to cite sources, but this forum is pretty informal, it's not a medical journal! Besides, plagiarism isn't illegal.

However, it could be copyright violation if it is not a fair use usage, and that is illegal, so be aware of that.

It was an article on Old Christmas. The article was by a guy in Tellico plains about animals talking.
I thought this forum was no more than a conversation. If I was writing something for college credit or to be published I would have cited it. If I had been talking on the phone, I probably would have referred to the page.

The author of the article replied and called me a plagiarist. Not very nice to get on Christmas Eve.

I will copy and paste some walk throughs on computer help, rather than type 800 words.

If anything else, it's always proper "net etiquette" to cite the source of copied/pasted stuff on any online forum.

It's OK to plagiarize. I condone the practice. After all, it's what got me through school. Some folks were born to copy. Plagiarists need to be treated with compassion. Sometimes we do it compulsively, or because we really feel the urge to copy. We love to copy all sorts of things. We feel it in our very soul. It's who we are. Sure, some do it maliciously, but not all. Educators really need to understand who the real plagiarists are, as opposed to those who are just cheaters. I think plagiarists also demonstrate other compulsive tendencies which are unfairly demonized in our culture. The desire to spam is one of them. But these traits can also prove highly successful in advertising and associate marketing careers. The reason the school system is failing is because there is only one way to learn and teach. That is unfair. Also, schools just don't focus enough on what you're actually GOOD at. There needs to be an individualist approach. I've been labelled a plagiarist, a spammer, and such. It feels good and meaningful to me to do these things, but unfortunately others don't see the meaning at all. That's why I'm here to speak up for myself and others like me. We have a way of being that we must protect. Plagiarists and Spammers Unite! Be proud, young plagiarists who suffer discrimination in school and work. Be proud, spammers who are banned from websites and even imprisoned. Hold your head up high and don't let the system drag you down. We're all different, and that's OK. Who's to say plagiarism and spam are not beneficial? And more importantly, must difference have a BENEFIT in order to exist? We have a right to just be.
