G.O.P. Blocks Veteran Jobs Bill
By LAWRENCE DOWNES
Veterans won’t be getting a new, billion-dollar jobs program, not from this Senate. Republicans on Wednesday afternoon blocked a vote on the Veterans Job Corps Bill after Jeff Sessions of Alabama raised a point of order — he said the bill violated a cap on spending agreed to by Congress last year. The bill’s sponsor, Patty Murray of Washington, said that shouldn’t matter, since the bill’s cost was fully offset by new revenues. She said Mr. Sessions and his party colleagues had been furiously generating excuses to oppose the bill, and were now exploiting a technicality to deny thousands of veterans a shot at getting hired as police officers, firefighters and parks workers, among other things.
The vote was 58-40; the bill needed 60 votes to proceed.
It would be easier to admire the Republicans’ late-breaking fiscal scrupulosity if their motives — denying the Obama administration any kind of victory this year, whatever the cost to jobless vets — weren’t so transparent. It’s probably useful to remind Republicans like John McCain (a “nay” on the jobs bill) that wounded, jobless and homeless veterans aren’t a fact of nature. They’re a product of the wars that Congress members voted for, the war debt they piled on, and the economy they helped ruin.
“It’s unbelievable that even after more than a decade of war, many Republicans still will not acknowledge that the treatment of our veterans is a cost of war,” Ms. Murray said in a statement after the vote.

What better way to show the veterans that you care after sending them off to war, than to bring them back and tell them that they don't give a damn if they can make a living or not.

When Mitt Romney said he would increase the already bloated defense budget, you should have know that most of the money would be spent on new gadgets, and very little would be spent on the veterans.

Are veterans trying to become the next class of people who are unable to care for themselves?
Nanny state has castrated enough men without destroying men that had the balls to volunteer.
Politicians whine about these downtrodden men while the veterans keep on taking care of themselves.

What do you mean TRYING to become? Do you have any idea how much of the homeless population are VETERANS? I can't remember the exact percentage off the top of my head so I'm not going to quote it nor look it up, but it's HUGE!

This is now a new problem. Duh. The goverment takes forever to do ANYTHING so if this is at the table today then you can bet it's been an issue for a long time!

When will some of you finally realize that we are almost bankrupt? We can't keep borrowing money for everything no matter if it's needed or not. I'm a veteran, but I've never been dependent on the government. I worked and struggled to raise my family and none of my children have ever had to rely on the government. Why do so many of you do so? Can't you make it on your own without your hero, Obama, trying to get you moochers benefits? Four more years of Obama and the government will be broke and then even people who DESERVE benefits won't get them. You can continue to spout your bs but you know Obama can't run on his failed record.

I'm sure job opportunities in the private sector are flooding in when you are missing arms, legs, and wake up screaming in the middle of the night...

Its funny how those poor taxpayers have no trouble with socialism in the military when these guys are still fighting in some sandbox, they only have trouble with military socialism when the fighting is over.

I'm sure you are not a veteran anymore than Obama. Obama is just trying to use veterans for political purposes. Before he was president he had a totally different attitude towards the military. Now that he is in a tight race for president he is sucking up to them. He and his psychopants will literally do anything to win this election. If he loses I predict the worst riots since the 1970's. All that anyone who is undecided has to do is look at some of the types of people supporting him. Most of them a disgusting people with no moral scruples.

hey, dickweed, guess what? when you needed to 'work and struggle' to raise your family we weren't in the middle of an economic crisis where even college graduates were fightig for minimum wage jobs!

it's so annoying when old people try to compare today with "their day." my mother in law walked into an office wearing a short skirt in the 70's and was making 20+ an hour when she retired. she didn't spend one day in college. nevermind the fact that when she was close to retiring, every person that had been hired in the past 20 years had degrees, she didn't understand why people couldn't 'just go in and get a job' like she did.

i hate stupid people.

Ron Paul's solution to this was to not go into so many stupid wars, to stop being world policeman, and reduce the size of our military socialism empire abroad.

How many of you weary taxpayers were with him, rather than beating the war drums with Romney, Santorum, or Gingrich?

You remember in the movie "Bruce Almighty", when Jim Carrey stands there as God and makes stupid sentences come out of Steve Carrell's mouth while he's doing the newscast? Obama must be Jim Carrey, as his god-like control is making some really stupid shit come out of Mitt Romney's mouth lately.

I'm with you on this point.

Both of my parents never had a college degree either, and yet they made pretty good money as uneducated people.

They both vote republican and have a dislike of unions, but they won't admit that their entry into the workforce at the right time, just after all the 'heavy lifting' by union pioneers had raised the standard of living for the uneducated, was responsible for a good portion of their financial success as uneducated people.

They never spent a dime, while expecting their kids and grandkids to pay once, perhaps twice, on an advanced education needed to stay employed nowadays, just so we kids can achieve the same inflation-adjusted wages they experienced with zero education. They have no problem with their offspring dropping 20 to 50 grand down the rabbit hole twice because "that's the responsible thing to do" to hold onto a job nowadays.

They also got into the housing market via the GI bill (a govt subsidy) when housing cost under $25,000. I'd like to see them go shopping for real estate today as a couple starting out. They bought low on a subsidy, sold high during the bubble, and now sit around critiquing the actions of Fannie and Freddie.

They confuse a being-in-the-right-place-at-th e-right-time "windfall" with "the product of hard work".

They area generation that bought a new foreign car every 4 years, while I am driving a 15 year old American car. I would like to buy a new one, but I had to send my car money down that damn education hole (math and science degrees both, not basket weaving) twice.

No it's not about our veterans. It's about a bunch of misguided people distorting issues in order to turn voters against Romney. I know lots of veterans some of whom are disabled from the Iraq war. They get the help they need. How many veterans do you personally know? Any time someone is not for more government spending(by the way we're almost broke)you say they are against someone. We don't have access to an infinite amount of money. The spending party will come to an end one way or another. It can't go on much longer. Just look at whats going on in Europe where they're having to cut back on spending for health care, retirement, and other essentials. Do we want that to happen here? It will if we don't stop all the INCREASED spending.

Democrats had total control with a super majority in congress and did everything they wanted to for two years.
Since they solved our problems during this total control obviously there is no use in passing anymore legislation unless the democrats screwed up everything during the first two years of Obama's total control.
