One sought, one in custody in Rogersville fatal 'sniper' shootingBy Staff Report
ROGERSVILLE — One suspect was in custody and another "person of interest" was being sought in connection with a fatal sniper style shooting that occurred Tuesday night in the Rogersville Walmart parking lot.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walmart parking lot on Route 66 in Rogersville. Witnesses told police the gunman fired into a crowd of youths gathered in the parking lot from a elevated distance at a nearby car wash.
Jackson B. Sellers, 18, was was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Holston Valley Medical Center from what investigators describe as a single gunshot wound to the head.
Wednesday evening police were still keeping details they released about the shooting to a minimum, at least until they have an opportunity to speak to Ronald Eugene Brewer, 19, 126 Bailey Johnson Road, Rogersville.
Brewer has been identified by police as a person of interest in the shooting. Rogersville Police Chief Doug Nelson said Brewer should be considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone who comes into contact with Brewer should "use caution and do not approach him," Nelson added.
Brewer was last seen driving a black Nissan Maxima, and police ask anyone who knows of his whereabouts to contact the RPD at xxx-7555 or their local law enforcement agency.
Rogersville police have arrested Travis Lee Goins, 22, also of 126 Bailey Johnson Road, Rogersville, and charged him with first-degree murder by criminal responsibility of another.
According to the arrest warrant filed by RPD Detective Jim Shanks, witnesses said that Brewer and Goins had been together at the Walmart parking lot Tuesday night prior to the shooting.
The warrant alleges that Goins and Brewer asked a witness to keep everyone at the parking lot when they left.
"After being taken into custody, Travis Lee Goins did admit being with Ronald Eugene Brewer, and he did confirm that Brewer had discussed fighting the individuals at the Walmart parking lot," Shanks stated in the arrest warrant. "They had left and drove to Brewer’s residence in Mooresburg and then returned to the car wash overlooking the parking lot where the individuals were gathered. Goins further advised that Brewer had then taken out a rifle and shot, and that after the shooting he had driven away and (Goins) had later given (Brewer) money which would assist Mr. Brewer."
Nelson stated that witnesses indicated there had been al altercation in the parking lot prior to the departure of Goins and Brewer.
But, police do not believe Sellers was involved in the altercation. Nelson said Sellers was not acquainted with Brewer or Goins.
Goins was lodged in the Hawkins County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Being a monday morning QB allow me to say it would benefit WALMART very much and the town of rogersville to no longer allow teens and others to gather on their property. It would seem negligence is the norm for the Big Box store of late. Local police were aware of this as was the Walmart store. Parking lots are not the place for groups of teens to gather and thus these issues are not as capable of occuring.

The kids at Wal Mart arent the problem if we follow sad sacks suggestion than with all the school shootings in the past is it the schools fault because kids go there? Its an individual person or persons who do these things. Most of our young people are pretty good kids and we cant blame them for what happened. Just my opinion

In my opinion, confussed (mis-spelled) father, you need to get your head out of the sand. We do have some good kids, but given the opportunity most kids will try things (drugs, drinking, sex). Check up on your own children, see what they are up to. Most kids will stand and lie right to your face, and be very convincing. Always question where they are going and who will be there and then go and do a drive by or even stop to see how things are going. Don't say, but that's showing them I don't trust them. Bull!!! How many kids were in that parking lot that their parents knew they were in Walmart parking lot? How many knew where their child was? Do a little investigating, it could save a life.

Parents, Police and Walmart could have prevented this by simply enforcing the simple fact that you do not have a right to park and gather on private property or business. Schools are designated for education snd it is understood that kids, teens will attend. Parking lots in town or otherwise? Sorry but this was preventable by good parenting and in many cases these days Police and others having stepped in to provide parenting for unruly kids.My parents never allowed me to hang out on someone's property. This sad case is reason enough.

I think that someone needs to sue Wal-Mart over this whole thing. They have had an ongoing problem in that parking lot with little punk ass kids and yet they do NOTHING to maintain a saf enviroment in their own lot.

i like walmart apple fritters, my pants are getting a little too tight. Can i sue? walmart knows those fritters are nothing but a nuisance to someone like me. they should hide those things when i go in. they should follow me through the store and out to the parking lot to make sure i dont have someone slip me a fritter.

If the youth of this town had somewhere structured to hang out and play video games and talk, whatever, they would not be in the Wal-Mart Parking Lot, or Big lots Parking lot ,or in the park. And,Yes we all appreicate the skate park, but not all kids skate. In fact I rember when everyone in town was all against skaters.Look where our kids have turned to, now there not skaters anymore, they are trying to be Gangsters, and getting killed off one by one.Aren't you sooo proud of them?Where are your kids tonight?Do you know?God Bless all the families involved, your in our prayers.

It is so easy to look for who is at fault once something happens. I grew up in Rogersville until I joined the Army in '84 and have been back home quite often. As long as I can remember people "hung out" somewhere in town and there was seldom a problem. I remember hanging out at the cable office, then the medical center, Charley's and finally Big Lots. That's what we did stand around and talk, pass football and it never was a problem. Now that something happens with one mentally unstable kid then it's blame everyone except the one responsible and mass punishment for the others. Now is not the time to play the blame game but to pray for the families involved.

By having a security guard make all people who are loitering in their lot leave.

If youngsters do not have a sanctioned place where they can get together and hang out (on a low budget/income), then there is going to be injuries and deaths as a result.

The parents are probably out partying.

These kids are of age.

Hey Todd, I thought you were above making a statement like that, unless you know the parents.

Ok, here is my standpoint...
This was over some gang retarded shizz! Crypts and Bloods... Regardless of anything, this is causing the world to crash!!! Since when is it "ok" to go out and shoot some1? It pisses me off to have to hear it EVERY MINUTE!!! Look, i feel sorry for the guy who died, and i feel sorry for the parents involved, and others around them, BUT look, the problem is not who pulled the trigger, and its not who was with whom... The problem resides with f'n gangs!!! Why would anyone want to go and kill some1 who just wheres a different color? What does it show when it 5 blues kill 1 red? or vice-versa? I could really care less, because ppl who hang around SHIT get SHIT on them... but oh well wat do i know...

These are not REAL gang people but only wannabe punks who think that by having a red or blue bandanna qualifies them to be called a gang. These little bltches would wet their pants and start crying for mamma if a REAL crip or blood ever showed up.
