ROGERSVILLE - Auditors raised several red flags in their most recent review of Hawkins County's finances.
The audit of the fiscal year ending June 2012, released in November by the Tennessee Division of Local Government Audit, yielded six "findings" and two recommendations that auditors believe would improve the county's "accountability and quality of services provided to the citizens in Hawkins County."
The first "finding" dealt with four thefts from the Highway 113 convenience center, which occurred in July and August 2012. According to the audit document, the thefts were reported to the Hawkins County Sheriff's Office as well as to the state Comptroller's Office.
"Approximately $600 worth of scrap metal, including chairs, lawn and garden equipment, and batteries, plus a surveillance camera, were removed from the convenience center," auditors noted.
According to the report, one employee resigned and was not charged.

why don t the auditors worry about how much the school system spends on stupid stuff than worrying so much about some trash that got stolen. i bet they know that they would find more than they could handle and cause a big uproar

Us professionals can spend money on totally asinine projects and outrageous salary for useless employees and still justify it in the budget. As long as the paperwork looks good the state officials couldn't care less how much money is wasted.

I hadn't heard about the convenience center.
Honestly I don't care if those poor souls take home some useless junk that someone threw out. That is called recycling. The work there is unpleasant and pays little. Taking home the odd battery that still has some life in it, there is no harm in that.
Meanwhile we have a corrupt system where commissioners vote a psychopathic judge in office, we have police and deputies that are dealing in drugs, stealing drugs from the evidence locker or accepting kickbacks from dealers, we have corruption from one side of the county to the other, and they want to focus on the guy that collects the trash keeping some for himself.
That is pathetic, it is an abomination, and it is not justice.
